The only realistic paths forward are either 1.) President Biden remains the nominee, and in turn—absent a seismic governmental or political event in his favor (which could happen)—Trump likely wins in November; Or 2.) Historically unpopular Kamala Harris takes the party’s reins. In the latter scenario Harris could choose Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as her VP, putting the crucial swing state back squarely in play, hope that the historic nature of her candidacy energizes the backbone of the party, and give it a shot. Neither is far from a sure thing. But we have reached the fork in the proverbial road. My latest in The Daily Beast https://lnkd.in/e6kN6_3A

Melissa you know who needs to be on the ticket. A man with great government experience, global brand and name recognition and the man that led us through Covid. Yes the man/leader that we all (the world) tuned into to hear every day during Covid. President Cuomo. Tough leader who is passionate and cares. Any warts he may have pale in comparison to Orange man.

Kamala and Josh (both good people) may energize the party but this ticket will surely LOSE to Trump. We need candidates who will stand up to Bully Trump and win. My favorite ticket is either Cuomo-DeRosa or Raskin-Cuomo. Forget Harris. We need credible candidates. Cuomo and DeRosa kept us all from dying during the pandemic with their data-driven brains and Raskin ran a brilliant Impeachment strategy. Plus, Cuomo is pro-Israel and we need someone to stand up to those Hamas-loving agitators.

Beshear and Whitmer help Dems with blue wall too. Shapiro is great but I believe still in first term and maybe a little too new. Newsom may be too much Calif in a condensed calendar. Oppo too easy even though he is ready on day one to do the job. Harris is an interesting question as to whether she has enough time to change the narrative of Biden and of herself? As you point out with her numbers have never being good, but have been better recently once got hold of choice issue and away from immigration/wall. Dems have a real mess on their hands because no one of any stature challenged the primaries. Case study to be written on this one and what not to do. Feels like trending towards change especially if congressional members see themselves at risk. However the issue is the mechanics and is change even possible at this point🍿👀

Melissa - big fan here, read your book, check your blogs when I can. I disagree with the points in your column. 90 minutes does not 3 1/2 years of a successful term make. President Biden needs to lean into his strength which is a successful first term. And...the more the public sees Trump for what he is - nothing more than a fat rich white guy - the more the creamy middle of the American working class will get out and vote for Biden....

I remember a presidential candidate who chose a VP solely to try to win a swing state. He lost anyway.

Its decision time. The longer the Democratic Party takes in deciding whether Biden is fit to serve as the nominee, the less time we are spending talking about Donald Trump, and the Republican Parties policies.
