During our sessions on violence, children share heartbreaking stories happening to them and within their families. This clearly shows the extent of the prevalance of violence in our communities. Addressing this requires a multi-faceted approach that includes prevention strategies and community engagement. Violence is global challenge that requires urgent action. Over the years, we have intensified efforts to combat violence against children by advocating for preventive and protective measures, raising awareness, providing education, creating supportive environments and working hand in hand with different stakeholders to build the capacity of communities to create a safer and better world for children. #childprotection #endviolence #communityengagement

There are so many ways we can all come together to build strong communities and support families (which is prevention). This month, and every month, take time to do simple things for yourself, your neighbors or families in your community. Here are a few ideas to get you started. ~Help a friend, neighbor, or relative. Being a parent isn’t easy. Offer a helping hand take care of the children, so the parent(s) can rest or spend time together. ~Help yourself. When the big and little problems of your everyday life pile up to the point you feel overwhelmed and out of control; take time out. ~Get involved. Ask your community leaders, clergy, library, and schools to develop services to meet the needs of healthy children and families. ~Promote programs in school. Teaching children, parents, and teachers prevention strategies can help to keep children safe. Don’t forget to wear blue on Friday to raise awareness for Prevention Month!

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and DHS Secretary Valerie Arkoosh, MD, MPH joined the PA Family Support Alliance (PFSA) earlier this week at the Capitol to honor the 2024 Blue Ribbon Champions for Safe Kids who have gone the extra mile to protect PA children. “Protecting children starts with supporting families – this work cannot exist in a vacuum. Too often situations of potential abuse and neglect start with families having difficulty meeting essential needs. I firmly believe that no family needs to go through life alone, and that extra hand and sense of community can be something that gives parents the hope and support they deserve – support that can be transformative and result in better circumstances for their entire family,” said Secretary Arkoosh. “As we recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month and celebrate our 2024 Blue Ribbon Champions, let’s use this as an opportunity to remember that it takes all of us working together to support families, to protect children, and build a Commonwealth and communities that do more for people at risk or struggling.
