And up to half of the bacteria that cause the infections are resistant to at least one antibiotic But, now a test that can identify how to treat a UTI in 45mins has now been selected and its been awarded a £8m prize The winning Sysmex Astrego AB PA-100 AST system is based on technology from Uppsala University in Sweden. A 400-microlitre sample of urine is placed on a phone-sized cartridge and then into a shoebox-sized analyser unit. It can spot bacterial infection within 15 minutes, and identify the antibiotic to treat it within 45 minutes. The test costs about £25 for one cartridge in the private sector, but industry experts say public-sector adoption and high-volume production could see that drop. However, if it became cheap enough for public health facilities or pharmacies, there’s no reason why it couldn’t be effective and really helpful #diagnostics #UTI #pointofcare

The millions of people impacted by the chronic aftereffects of COVID-19 following infection with SARS-CoV-2 present a significant public health challenge. A recent study in the Annals of Internal Medicine examined whether current tests were adequate to identify post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC). PASC, or long COVID, encompasses a broad range of symptoms that can significantly impact quality of life. Depending on the specific manifestations, the symptoms can vary from moderate to severe.
