One significant feature that older generations of SDRAM modules, particularly DDR3 and earlier, have that newer generations like DDR4 and DDR5 may lack is #backwardcompatibility. DDR3 modules, for example, were designed to be backward compatible with DDR2 and DDR memory slots. This means that if you had a motherboard that supported DDR3 memory, you could use DDR3 modules in DDR2 slots (with reduced performance) and DDR2 modules in DDR slots. This flexibility was beneficial for users upgrading their systems gradually without having to replace the entire infrastructure. However, with the progression to DDR4 and DDR5, there has been a shift in the physical design of the memory modules and changes in electrical specifications, leading to a lack of backward compatibility with earlier DDR generations. DDR4 and DDR5 memory modules are not physically or electrically compatible with DDR3, DDR2, or DDR modules, which can limit the upgrade options for users with older systems. JEDEC standardises new DDR5 CAMM2 memory modules

JEDEC has revealed key details about its upcoming standards for DDR5 Multiplexed Rank Dual Inline Memory Modules (MRDIMM) and a next-generation Compression-Attached Memory Module (CAMM) for LPDDR6.  The new MRDIMM and CAMM for LPDDR6 are set to revolutionize the industry with unparalleled bandwidth and memory capacity. MRDIMM enables CPU to access two ranks of memory simultaneously on a single DIMM with a chip-set layout of two identical DDR5 DIMMS. By accessing two DRAM devices at the same time, the CPU can effectively double the memory bandwidth coming from the DIMM. MRDIMM is envisioned to support more than two ranks and is being designed to utilize standard DDR5 DIMM components ensuring compatibility with conventional RDIMM systems. As a follow-on to JEDEC’s JESD318 CAMM2 Memory Module standard, JC-45 is developing a next-generation CAMM module for LPDDR6 targeting a maximum speed greater than 14.4 GT/s. As planned, the module will also offer a 24-bit subchannel, a 48-bit channel and a connector array.
