Mercer Health recently hosted three local college students as part of its annual Medical Staff Summer Internship & Exploration Program. This program is offered each summer for college students who are considering applying for medical school. Three students were accepted into the program for 2024, and began their first day in the program on Monday, June 3. This year’s interns included: Morgan Guggenbiller, from Maria Stein, attending Bowling Green State University; Leah Eichler, from Rockford, attending the University of Pittsburgh; and Meghan Wiss, from Minster, attending Bowling Green State University. “The summer internship and exploration program offered me valuable insights to the different types of doctors practicing in our rural area. I am grateful for the experience, advice and knowledge the physicians provided as I apply to medical schools,” states Guggenbiller. These students worked directly with a variety of Mercer Health providers, both in the hospital and outpatient settings, where our providers shared their experiences and the lifestyle of a physician. The goal of this internship program is to help students make informed decisions about applying for medical school. To learn more about this program, visit https://lnkd.in/g7izf_-c

No end to woes of FMGs as they continue with unpaid internships Several medical colleges and hospitals have completely abolished the seats for FMG interns, citing lack of funds as the reason The issue of Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) not receiving stipends has been a cause for concern for a long time. Recently, while hearing a writ petition, the Supreme Court directed Medical colleges to pay a stipend to FMG interns, in parity with the domestic MBBS interns. Overlooking the SC observations and NMC provisions, several medical colleges have overlooked this provision, instead, a few colleges have asked the FMG interns to submit authorised affidavits, confirming that they would not demand a stipend during their internship. Also, a few medical colleges have completely withdrawn the seats for FMG candidates. https://lnkd.in/grHVfGK2

From the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC): “Diverse perspectives and backgrounds in the health professions — spanning classrooms, labs, and clinical settings — enriches the educational experiences of all medical and health professions students and the teaching experiences of faculty. Diversity, including racial and ethnic diversity, is essential to improving the overall health of our nation. In fact, diversity cultivates an innovation mindset, catalyzes creativity and discovery, and enhances complex problem-solving, prediction, and forecasting.” Our Talent Garden youth summits and summer internship program inspires youth of color to pursue healthcare careers. It moves us in the right direction to improve outcomes for #BlackMaternalHealth and lessen health disparities in marginalized communities. #healthequity #BlackMaternalHealthWeek https://lnkd.in/g6zJ-C5n

As my Nursing Internship wraps up in less than two weeks, I'm reflecting on the valuable lessons I've learned. One big takeaway is how important it is to prevent health problems before they become serious. By focusing on stopping issues early, we can reduce the need for complicated treatments later on. I'm excited to share more insights soon, but for now, let's remember the power of looking ahead in healthcare. #NursingInternship #preventivehealthcare #registerednurse

🚨BSc Life Science Graduates 🎓 Are you feeling anxious about the direction of your career? Don't worry, there's a plan! 🙃 Here are two options to consider: ♦️ Go back to school and pursue an Honours degree. After completing your degree, apply for an internship at NHLS. This internship will grant you registration with the HPCSA to practice under Medical Sciences but it's important to note that you need to complete the internship. ♦️ Alternatively, you can get a new degree with a university of technology, such as TUT in Medical Laboratory Sciences. However, even with this degree, you'll need to complete work-integrated learning, which means you need an internship at an accredited pathology lab such as Pathcare Laboratories, Lancet Laboratories, or Ampath Laboratories. Take control of your career and consider these options to open up new opportunities in the medical field. Good luck! 🍀 #Bsclifescience #bscgraduate
