This year’s Marni Reisberg Memorial Program is Friday, May 10, from 8:45 am to 10:45 am! Kristie Soriano, MS, CCC-SLP, Lynn Cerillo, MS, CCC-SLP, and Amanda Dell’Aira, MS, CCC-SLP are presenting The Balancing Act: Ethical Decision Making in Dysphagia Management This session is designed to present a framework to move from an impairment-based approach to shared decision-making to optimize patient-centered care and quality of life. For many SLPs, this means recommendations for diets that are more liberal than are in their comfort zone. To encourage shared decision, this session will replace some current dysphagia management techniques with an ethical rationale to support a patient’s right to choose and refuse treatment. Strategies to assist “in the conversation” will include an emphasis on InterProfessional Practice (IPP) which in the medical setting includes the physician, dietician, and nurse. Family Medicine - How to Reward Comprehensiveness? The FHO is a great model, but has flaws. There should be some reward for doctors who are comprehensive and manage complexity 'in house.' As opposed to "Referologists" who have huge rosters but simply refer everything out to Specialists. The challenge is: if there was a "Referral Reduction Bonus", that would harm patients. Because surely doctors would inappropriately NOT refer when referrals are truly needed. Any ideas how to reconcile this concept? Hypermobility is common in children - especially those who are neurodivergent. This would be valuable PD for ANY allied health therapists or health professionals working with neurodivergent children. I would love to see more practitioners understand when a child is more than just a little bendy. Our beautiful OT at Western Kids Health was the very first practitioner who ever mentioned hypermobility - and we’d seen a LOT of people by this time. She was the first person who connected post-school emotional meltdowns with how hard our child’s body was having to work just to sit at a desk, manipulate a pencil. All the things their body was expected to do during the day that was actually so much more tiring (and in some cases painful) for them. Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) are multi-systemic conditions that can impact children’s ability to participate in school, play, sport and life. Being multi-systemic it’s also important for professionals to be aware that some of their client’s concerns related to migraines, fatigue, stomach pain, headaches, pain or even emotional dysregulation and school can’t could be related to HSD or EDS. As an “invisible condition” I see so little true understanding of the impacts of Hypermobility in WA.
