I see two main aspects about this Unity pricing's change: 1. Financially, it's going to take a big toll on the industry, mostly those of us who are in mobile gaming. It doesn't make sense anymore for us to distribute our games in markets where monetization is 0 or close, even if it was just for the sake of offering entertainment to people in those markets. It's going to create a shift in strategy for many studios, both on the short-term (how are we going to adjust our acquisition/monetization strategy? Where do we distribute?) and the long-term (should we use Unity for our next games?) Unity is going to bill us on the basis of a shaky metric (installs) for something that they provided for free for years, and this, for no good reasons from a developer's perspective. 2. Beyond the financial impact, it's also a matter of trust. Many people have been used Unity for more than a decade, like us. And the fact that they are, without any prior notice, telling you that they're going to significantly impact your business, starting in less than 4 months, is simply not acceptable. Even if Unity were to change their mind, the simple fact that they did put this in place means they can't be trusted as a partner. And I'm really sorry to say that. What if they decide to suddenly ask for revenue-share as well? They just might. #Unity just became a giant risk (and cost driver) for every company using it.

Brilliant marketing from Unreal Engine during Unity's fiasco: "Our 5% royalty model only kicks in after your first $1M in gross revenue, meaning that if you make $1,000,001 you owe us 5 cents. Unity consists of two software components in its engine: The Unity Editor and the Unity Runtime, where the company have decided to start charging a fee for the Runtime, meaning that a fee is imposed for every install (including re-installs) 🤯 !
