Panorama Photography – Gemsbok are widely hunted for their spectacular horns that average 85 cm (33 in) in length. From a distance, the only outward difference between males and females is their horns, and many hunters mistake females for males each year. In males horns tend to be thicker with larger bases. Females have slightly longer, thinner horns. They are one of the few antelope species where female trophies are sometimes more desirable than male ones. A gemsbok horn can be fashioned into a natural trumpet and, according to some authorities, can be used as a shofar. Perfect circular patterns One of the underwater mysteries that once puzzled experts was the discovery of strange drawings in the sand with almost perfect circular patterns found on the seabed off Japan. It took them a decade to find out why they originated and why they suddenly appeared and disappeared until they finally managed to discover it. The author of these amazing formations, almost 2 meters wide, was a newly discovered species of puffer fish measuring no more than 12 centimeters. Subsequent studies determined that they were ornate circles to attract mating partners. Males spend six weeks building these "crop circles" underwater just to mate for a few seconds. To make them, he gathers fine sand in mounds and decorates them with seashells he finds. If he is lucky, the willing female will stand in the center of the circle to indicate approval for mating. If not, the ocean current will carry away his work of art. Nature will never cease to fascinate us. Saturday creativity post. My photography book project has languished in development hell for more than a year. Now, I have begun to work on it again. It will be an odd photography book. Here is an excerpt from a section on the 1:1 aspect ratio. History 1:1 The first camera that used the 1:1 aspect ratio was the Rolleiflex, released in 1929. It was used by famous photographers like Diane Arbus, Robert Capa, and Richard Avedon. Other famous people who used the Rolleiflex include actors Cary Grant, and Grace Kelly. Grace Kelly was also Princess of Monaco. For you, and me, this opens up certain possibilities. For example, the first King Kong movie takes place after the Empire State Building was opened on May 1, 1931, and before the movie was released on April 7, 1933. This means a photographer might have used a Rolleiflex to take pictures of King Kong in New York, on Skull Island, or both. Or, you might want to visit Skull Island. If you want to create a treasure trove of old photos from that time war photographer Robert Capa and paleontologist David Huxley, played by Cary Grant in Hello Baby (1938), crashlanded on Skull Island and got awesome dinosaur photos, 1:1 aspect ratio and Rollei film emulation might be the way to go. It just so happens that the film emulation software I use, DXO Filmpack, has two Rolleiflex film emulations…

The INTERNATIONAL BIRD RINGING PHOTO CONTEST is a nature photography contest organized by the Ringing Scheme of the Aranzadi Sciences Society. The aim of this contest is the divulgation of the the mission, vision and values associated with the scientific ringing of birds, in favor of the research and conservation of this group of living beings. We look for high quality photographs, both technically and aesthetically, of wild, non-captive bird species, tagged with any type of individual identification mark (metal, color or Darvic ring, collar, wing band, etc.) or tracking device (GPS, radio transmitter, etc.). The Glass Octopus Vitreledonella richardi, also known as the glass octopus, is an incirrate octopus. It is in the genus Vitreledonella and of the family Amphitretidae. The glass octopus (Vitreledonella richardi) is a very rarely seen cephalopod found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. The species gets its name from its nearly-transparent body—you can see straight through to the optic nerve, eyes and digestive tract. These octopuses mostly live in the aphotic zone, meaning deep waters where sunlight doesn’t reach, at around 3,000 feet. They can grow to about 1.5 feet long and are estimated to live about 2-5 years. The glass octopus lives in deep, hard-to-reach places, so there is much we don’t know about this translucent and luminescent cephalopod. So far, there have only been a few sightings and a few specimens recovered from the gut contents of their predators. Researchers in the U.S. Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument acquired live footage of the glass octopus, getting a closer look at these highly elusive and fascinating creatures. According to Live Science, the scientist spotted two glass octopuses using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV).
