Last month, I made the decision to switch office as an intern. After Spending most of my time surrounded by juniors (adv.) there ,I had the opportunity to observe their values and work ethic. Despite their talent and academic achievements, it became evident that the office culture wasn't aligning with my professional growth. A senior colleague, recognizing my potential (i have no idea what he saw in me ), advised me to explore other opportunities, acknowledging that the current environment might not be conducive to my development. While I appreciated the support and opportunities provided in my previous role, I realized the importance of being in a positive and uplifting environment. In any workplace, it's crucial to foster a culture of mutual respect and encouragement. Rather than dictating tasks, it's more effective to collaborate and empower colleagues to excel in their roles. I believe in nurturing a supportive atmosphere where everyone feels valued and motivated to perform their best. After joining my new office, I've been pleasantly surprised by the welcoming atmosphere and the sense of camaraderie. While there are still expectations and guidelines to follow, I'm treated as a valued team member rather than just an intern. This experience reaffirms my belief that fostering a positive work environment is essential for productivity and overall well-being. I'm excited about the opportunities ahead and look forward to contributing to the success of my new team. I Quit My Internship Midway! I recently started an internship as an HR intern. Within just a week, I realized that this role wasn’t offering me anything valuable. The tasks were basic and repetitive. Every day, I was required to give updates in six different ways, which felt pointless and a waste of time. As HRs, we were merely increasing the organization's numbers without providing any real value. There was nothing in the role that required my expertise—it was work that anyone could do. The tasks felt robotic, lacking creativity and purpose. We had no interaction with the manager, who seemed distant and uninvolved. There was no motivation to improve or try new things. This made me think back to my time with an NGO, where the environment was positive, uplifting, and full of encouragement. We supported each other’s growth. But this internship felt different. I quickly realized that I didn’t belong there. Despite this, I’m proud of the internships I’ve completed so far, even if they were fewer. I’ve had the opportunity to work with amazing mentors and colleagues who have helped me grow. To all of them, wherever they are, I send my love and gratitude. It’s that time of year at General Dynamics Mission Systems. Time to welcome 30+ Interns to our business in our Pittsfield location. Over the past few weeks Kelly Krok and I have been welcoming the Interns every Monday, spending time orienting them to our mission, our structure, our Benefits, our expectations, etc. We take time to ask them what they are hoping to get out of their Internship. We also ask Why did they choose GDMS for their Internship? The answers are amazing! I have stressed to all of them that their goals should be: 💥 Make connections 💥 Build relationships 💥 Ask questions Last night I had an opportunity to attend the Intern KickOff Meet and Greet. Our Interns did not disappoint. They listened during Orientation to the advice we gave, and boy did they work the room! Approaching managers, introducing themselves, asking questions, sharing their expectations. I’m not gonna lie - I had a grin from ear to ear. So proud of this group already, and there’s so much more left of their time with us! Can’t wait to see what they accomplish this summer. And for those rising seniors, hopefully they will be back as full time hires after graduation. Does your Company have an Internship program to feed the pipeline?
