Here's a bit of an update regarding where I stand when it comes to eventually joining the US Coast Guard:
After further research and inquiries with regards to my future enlistment in the Coast Guard, I've come to the conclusion that going back to Aviation for a bit (as a potential Aircrewman-Electrical and Electronics Technician - AET) may not be the best option for me due to the extremely stringent requirements as imposed within the flight medical exam.
That being said, I've now looked further into becoming an Electronics Technician (ET). The recruiter I'm in contact with has stated that new enlistment bonuses will be up in two months (October 2023, the beginning of Fiscal Year 2024). Currently, EB for the Electronics field is around $60k (after tax deductions), although that may change within the coming months.
Even though I may not be primarily after money, this looks like a terrific financial cushion in the months and years to come. Rather, I'm more focused towards re-learning every single aspect of technical maintenance. In turn, maybe I'll supplement it by taking additional courses at a nearby school before I join.
Still, I cannot lose sight of my goal to become an officer someday. Upon joining, I'll be willing to spend a few years (two to five years optimally) as an enlisted Coastie before putting in my package for either the Officer Candidate School - Reserves (OCS-R) or Temporary Commissioning program option (OCS-T).
To dreams, wherever they lead us to!
