£81bn in Banknotes Circulating in the UK According to Bank of England figures, the value of banknotes in circulation within the UK is £81bn and even in an era of cashless transactions, the value of notes to buy goods and services during 2022, (UK Finance) was £6.4bn. People still like using cash to buy products and in addition, they see it as a way of storing value, which might be why the BoE, has so much in circulation. However, cash is largely untraceable and easy to exchange for goods, which brings with it the threat of robbery. Holding cash on site or taking it to a bank to deposit, brings with it a range of threats, but perhaps the greatest is to the wellbeing of people. Although cash transactions are becoming less commonplace, there is still a lot of money that has to protected, as it moves around, from the note printers, to the banks, to customers, to retailers and back to the banks. Security remains important. Bank robberies are not as common as they once were and this is largely due to the enormous amount of work that was undertaken, to reduce both their incidence and increase the protection for staff and customers. I have nothing against tattoo parlours. Indeed, once away from the traditional dodgy Saturday night “I❤️Mum”, tattoos can be fine art and lasting quality. But the time to consider flood defences is before the waters rise, and the time to prescribe medicine is before the condition becomes chronic. Similarly the time to consider and plan a banking hub is while multiple branches remain open, and staff, resources, security, furniture, cubicles etc can be reallocated or disposed of in a way that preserves business viability. Not a scorched earth policy that allows banks to show that demand has reduced - but only because friends and family have stepped to help the elderly, or those who struggle with the technology of online banking, or don’t have access to cars (or extinction-level rural bus services). Or customers try to use the tech but then fall prey to savvy scammers. Or end up just putting the money under the mattress. So come on Frome - as a vibrant and forward-thinking town you can do better than this. You can think strategically and also focus on the human factor. Varo Bank. I’m a customer there and for some reason not one person can tell me why I’m unable to deposit checks or use Zelle and it’s become frustrating. I’ve been a customer since 2020 and it’s my only bank. But am highly considering leaving because the customer service has become non-existent and poorly run. Extremely poor service experience: Despite lodging a complaint with the UBL customer support team concerning an issue with my ATM received from UBL Branch No. 1345, Lunja Chok, College Road, Lahore, the response has been highly unsatisfactory. Upon visiting the branch, I was instructed to print a photocopy of my CNIC, when I return back to recieve my ATM had been tampered with in my absence. Subsequently, I had to order a new ATM due to unauthorized transactions. However, even the replacement ATM raises suspicions.Despite raising this issue through a formal complaint, it was closed without any action taken. Such negligence and lack of accountability are unacceptable. Until concrete steps are taken to rectify this situation, I intend to boycott UBL and transfer my funds to another bank.
