Today marks my 16th year anniversary at Barclays UK 🏦 I remember my first day as a cashier and colleagues telling me they had been here over 20 years and me sitting thinking ‘Woah, how have they done that, I won’t be here that long’ but now look how time has flown, and I’m almost them… 😅 🩵 The main reason I have loved the last 16 years, the people, my colleagues, my role models, my friends. I’ve been blessed with the best and formed relationships that will last forever. 🧡 The growth I have seen in myself as a person, and that’s arose from opportunities I have been given and having the ability to push myself out of my comfort zone. ❤️ A moment I’ll remember forever was my first trip to Canary Wharf, now those who work there every day might not get this, but for me it was a big deal. From reading the address in my guide to insurance everyday to being stood in the building, it was a WOW moment for me. 💜 The level of care I’ve been shown, through divorce, house moves, dentist appointments, hospital stays, difficult times, and then the very greatest of moments too, becoming a mother, maternity leave, nativity plays, birthdays, the lot! 💛 Knowing I’ve truly made a difference to real people’s lives. That passion for changing people’s lives for the better will never leave me and will always play a part in what role I play in this business. First day done at Goldman Sachs #VPO. The highlight for me, outside of the egg rolls and chicken empanada hors d'oeuvres—and meeting coworkers in person for the first time—was a segment on fostering a #growthmindset. Part of that mindset is taking 100% responsibility for your life circumstances, or in the words of Jocko Willink, taking extreme ownership. Instead of blaming external factors for things that happen to you, take ownership of the problems and work to fix them. The important caveat I like to add, as Mark Manson put it, is this: "While not everything that happens in your life may be your fault, it is always your responsibility." This is key as many people struggle to accept unfairness. It might be unfair, but the most effective path is taking responsibility and taking action, no matter where the actual blame lies. This falls in line with the Stoics who said we must understand the difference between what we can or can't control...and for that which we can't, we must love our fate (amor fati) and accept the responsibility anyway. One thing Ryan Freitas encourages in our 1:1s is the practice of gratitude. Looking back on my first calendar year at JPMorgan Chase & Co. I find there are many things to be grateful for: - The opportunity to hire 18 remarkable team members; including 3 “boomerangs”, 2 internal transfers, and 2 amazing DDP analysts. - I came to Chase for impact at scale, and it has delivered. This year my team shipped category-leading products, massive integrations, and significant UI uplifts (100+ epics in all across 4 teams) reducing complaints and friction for our ~65MM customers while contributing to our business results - The opportunity to continue to work my innovation background and balance all that delivery with 3 “vision” workstreams. - The opportunity to foster and grow a research team that has helped us better connect with the category and customer - leading 10+ customer listening sessions and 4 unique research endeavors balancing qual and quant. - Finally, for the first time - a chance at something resembling balance. It was my first year as a parent and I wanted to be home by bedtime. Chase made that environment for me. I also made it the full year breastfeeding. For those that don’t know, that’s about 1,800 hours of work in and of itself (about 100 hours short of another full time job). Together, a feat for me. It’s been a hard, but rewarding year. This week marks my 4th year anniversary at Goldman Sachs. The time has gone so quickly and has been a steep but brilliant learning curve. But here are some things I have learnt over the years. 1. Learn the language of the business - get to know what numbers matter, what are the terms that your business uses and learn them. That way you can become part of and contribute to discussions more easily. 2. Your exciting new move is unsettling for the current team. Take time to listen, let them get to know you and you get to know them. 3. Find support in your peer group. I am privileged to have some wonderful peers. 4. Make the change. You won’t regret it.
