“Homelessness is not sexy”…is often the reason given for this issue not being further up the political agenda. I will tell you something else that is not very sexy…neglect and abuse of children. 80% of people affected by homelessness experienced childhood trauma including physical, sexual, emotional abuse or violence within the family. Close to 30% say that childhood trauma is the very reason they are homeless. Our homeless friends appear to be fair game for all sorts of abuse including from politicians. You often hear…”these people are on the street due to poor life choices”. If you can put 2+2 together it is crystal clear that for many the damage was done before they had any form of choice. Don’t you find it odd we have created a society that punishes children for being abused when they become adults? Are these the moral values we want to hold? At Under One Sky we collectively say “not in our name”. We are trying to bring these truths to the public consciousness while being a safe reliable and compassionate harbour for our homeless friends. We’ve connected with our friends out there 175,000 times in 3 years and counting. Every survivor coming out of human trafficking has needs. By creating a comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment plan and referral team, you can work together to meet the various needs of an individual experiencing trafficking and their family members. Here are the top 6 top emergent needs for survivors: 1. Safety 2. Medical care, including mental health care 3. Shelter 4. Food 5. Legal assistance 6. Treatment for substance use These items are crucial for each survivor to help set him or her up for success. This is a picture of my mother Regina. She would have been 64 on Monday March 11th. She was murdered on February 17, 1992 by her estranged boyfriend. Domestic violence has ripple effects for decades.
