This week, Rita Flaherty and I hosted the Global Contracts and Government Property and Business Developement and Sales teams in Cincinnati to drive closer collaboration between our teams and accelerate adoption of FLIGHT DECK, GE Aerospace’s proprietary lean operating model.
The engagement and excitement of the joint teams was fantastic to see. I look forward to seeing the benefits of the work we did this week!
Thank you for hosting this event, Mike and Rita. It was a great opportunity for the team to build stronger connections and invest in their Lean capabilities. Thanks also to everyone that traveled in from across the globe to bring your insights and energy!
Want to know how to implement a successful business system for your business?
✈ Check out this video where GE Aerospace ’s CEO Larry Culp shines a light on the essence of Operational Excellence, Strategy, Business Structure and Business Culture, and how they embrace all of this within one (new) business system.
🎥 In this insightful video, Culp explains the innovative "Flight Deck" business system, meticulously crafted to steer GE Aerospace towards unparalleled success.
🛫 This system, inspired by the renowned Danaher Business System (DBS) and the profound philosophy of Kaizen, embodies their commitment to continuous improvement and excellence in all facets of their operations.
✔ For GE Aerospace "Flight Deck" isn't just a system; it's a testament to their dedication to optimize #strategy, foster a robust business #culture and refining their organizational #structure. It serves as the cornerstone of their approach to operational excellence, guiding them through every endeavor with precision and agility.
💡 Personally I find this video not only informative but also inspiring as we continue our journey towards #Excellence. What type of business system did your company adopt? Feel free to share...
❗ My former Danaher colleagues, who had the same privilege as I had to work for a company lead by Larry Culp, will recognize a lot of different elements that were implemented at the OpCo’s we worked for and what’s now happening at GE Aerospace. A great mixture of various business factors you can’t afford not to have! (However, factors that many organizations simply don’t have, without even recognizing this).
Candidate: I have never heard of Collins Aerospace before what do you do?
Me: Our business is the result of mergers and acquisitions of several respected & market-leading aerospace companies. You may not know the relatively newer name but I can just about guarantee you have used, touched, or seen our products or services.
When you fly on a plane, our products will most likely be on board to make your flight more efficient, safer, and be more comfortable.
-The interior lighting systems and seating
-The lavatory
-The communication and navigation equipment that the pilot uses
-The app you use to track inbound flights(FlightAware is part of our amazing business providing real-time info to help expedite aircraft resource availability)
NOTE: When I jokingly complained to an engineer buddy of mine who worked on aircraft seats about how uncomfortable they are, he informed me that the primary focus is on high-G impacts and protecting your safety in turbulence and that comfort was a close second... I walked back my complaint very quickly and said thanks :-)

FOR-DEC is an aviation decision-making model that was developed in the 1990s by Lufthansa and the German Aerospace Center. It has been described as a method of applying structure and logic to a complex problem.
The acronym FOR-DEC stands for the six phases of the decision-making process. The exact wording used to describe each phase varies among different sources, but basically are as follows:
Facts: What’s the matter or what is going on here?
Options: Possible ways to solve the problem or what are our choices?
Risks and Benefits: What can be said for and against the different options?
Decision: What are we going to?
Execution: Who does what, when, and how?
Check: Is everything still ok or did everything work to plan?
In addition, the hyphen between the ‘R’ and ‘D’ is intended to make the pilot stop and reflect on whether anything essential was missing and whether all available information had been taken in to consideration.
