Ireland’s Nominee for European Commissioner; Member of Dáil Éireann (National Parliament of Ireland)

I was delighted today to accept the nomination of the Government of Ireland for the position of European Commissioner. I'd like to sincerely thank the Tánaiste Micheál Martin for putting my name before Cabinet and to the Taoiseach Simon Harris, Minister Eamon Ryan and all my Cabinet colleagues for their support. It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve in government in the past 4 years, initially as Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform and then as Minister for Finance. I'd like to acknowledge the support of my colleague Paschal Donohoe, with whom I have worked closely over that period. Over that time, the government and the people we serve have had to contend with some major challenges. We have responded to the shocks of Covid, the war in Ukraine, spiralling inflation and the cost of living. As I prepare to leave the Department of Finance tomorrow, the Irish economy is in very good health overall. We have full employment with a record 2.71 million at work. Our national debt is falling, and we are achieving large budget surpluses. Our economy has consistently been one of the best performing in the EU. We have set up two new long-term funds - the Future Ireland Fund and the Infrastructure, Climate and Nature Fund - and will have €10 billion lodged in them before the end of the year. These Funds make the future more secure for us all. Legislation on access to cash, an updated National Payments Strategy and Ireland's first National Financial Literacy Strategy are all in train. The Funds Review is nearing completion. And there is so much more. There are risks and challenges for sure - there always are - but I am confident about the future of our economy. As the Executive body of the EU, the policies and laws proposed and implemented by the European Commission have a direct impact on almost 450 million people across 27 Member States. I am immensely excited to have the opportunity to help shape policy across the EU. I will remain as a TD for the next few months, and will go through a rigorous ratification process to become a European Commissioner. 25 years ago this month, I ran for election for the first time as fresh faced 22 year old. I have enjoyed the journey since from Town Council to County Council to Dáil Éireann and to the Cabinet table. It has been the honour of my life. I’d like to thank the people of Cork South Central for their outstanding support down the years. I will be continuing in public service, but now in a different role and on a different stage. I couldn’t have done any of this without the love and support of my family, especially my wife Sarah McGrath, who has been a rock throughout. My brother Seamus McGrath has been by my side every step of the journey. My colleague Minister Jack Chambers will tomorrow replace me as Minister for Finance and I have every confidence he will do an excellent job. Thanks to everyone for their support to date. This is not a goodbye, merely a turning of the page.....

Michael McGrath TD you have done the State sterling service in your current Ministry and throughout your career in public life. Nobody could have been better chosen in my view, and your great service to Ireland continues in the European Institutions, where people in this country can be rightly proud of our new nominee. On a personal level, I am also delighted for you Michael. Congratulations. I wish you the greatest of success

Congratulations on your appointment. I hope you do your utmost to be a Commissioner of integrity working on behalf of all the citizens of Europe, as opposed to serving the interests of corporations. Please begin to use the ellipsis punctuation mark so as to avoid accusations of poor literacy on your grand new stage. An ellipsis is a punctuation mark of three dots. If it doesn't have three dots, it's not an ellipsis, and as such, has no meaning in the written word. Thank you. https://www.grammarly.com/blog/ellipsis/

Michael, I am delighted for you and 100% confident that you will secure a prestigious position in the Commission and do a stellar job for the entire EU Community as you have done during your time in domestic politics for the people of Ireland. In your new position I urge you to play a proactive role in supporting and enabling the progress of Ukraine 🇺🇦 and Moldova 🇲🇩 in their respective efforts to become members of the EU Community. 👏👏👏👏👏👏

Michael, very best of luck on the next chapter. An understanding of the best for Ireland is founded in best for Europe, but equally being able to distinguish the pitfalls along the way is the skillset you will bring to the role. From the few conversations I have been privileged to share with you I see 🇮🇪 holding a key role in the future expansion of the 🇪🇺 with the citizens at the core of that planning. Once you settle into your new role I look forward to welcoming you on the Lite Bite Lunch to share an update on the future.

Pity about your 'Blind Spot ' with Cork County Council, and your 'betrayal' of quality professionals, who needed support. Cork South Central and the Irish Defence Forces have been poorly served by the current incumbents of its constituency. We urgently need change. Deputy McGrath, having heard your address to us at the recent Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis and again a few weeks later when you addressed the Galway Delegates in the Ardilaun Hotel, I know how fortunate everyone in Ireland, and beyond, is to have you represent us and our interests as European Commissioner. Congratulations, Deputy McGrath, and God bless you, your family, as you turn the page to the next chapter in your life.
