Title: Balancing School Life with Professional Growth: My Experience at NSBE 50 As a biology major, the idea of attending an engineering conference initially seemed out of place. However, when a friend introduced me to the National Society for Black Engineers (NSBE) and its 50th-anniversary conference, I decided to explore further. Little did I know, it would be a transformative experience. The NSBE 50 conference, held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia, marked a historic milestone with its record-breaking attendance of approximately 18,000 individuals. From the moment I stepped into the opening ceremony, I felt the energy and enthusiasm of being part of something significant. One of the highlights of the conference was witnessing the presence of the founders of NSBE, a reminder of the rich legacy and impact of this association. Despite being a biology major, I found myself deeply immersed in the discussions, sessions, and networking opportunities the conference offered. What struck me the most was the diverse and vibrant community present at NSBE 50. I had the opportunity to connect with individuals from different parts of the country, each with their own unique stories and aspirations. It was inspiring to see young minds, like myself, eager to make a difference in their respective fields while balancing the demands of academia. Despite the busy schedule of attending classes, teaching at Georgia State University, and working in my research lab, attending NSBE 50 was undeniably worth it. The chance to network and build connections with professionals from leading companies was invaluable, opening doors to potential opportunities and collaborations in the future. Reflecting on my experience, I would encourage anyone considering attending a conference or networking event to take the leap. The insights gained, connections made, and experiences shared are invaluable for personal and professional growth. For those intrigued by NSBE, I urge you to mark your calendars for the next event in Chicago next year. Trust me, it's an experience you won't want to miss. “Public Engagement is an attitude.” That’s a guideline we refer to a lot when encouraging researchers to engage outside of the comfort zones of a lab. No matter the scale of activity - a huge event or personal conversations; it’s their tunes that create impactful exchanges. As we have been experiencing recently with one of our projects: Since 2023 we are a partner within the project Zukunft findet Stadt. Hochschulnetzwerk für ein resilientes Berlin, co-investigating modes of knowledge exchange and sustainable #transfer. Last month was super busy, and one of the many activities was participating at CityLAB Berlin #Kiezlabor at HTW-campus with a workshop on Building Engagement Projects, and a Discussion on #openscience and #publicengagement. Though small in size compared to other events, we had such inspiring exchanges! Or was it because of it? In trainings we are often asked “How to start a mutually meaningful conversation?”, or “What does it take to be open to collaborate?” While a simple answer to the first question might be that just asking this question often starts a conversation by itself, the latter is more complex. And often enough seems to lead to more disagreements than productivity. To keep having conversations about having conversations is not easy, and often enough does not feel comfortable, but taking that time usually pays of in the long-run. Workforce diversity is imperative for innovative science and technology. Yet due to funding inequities, research infrastructure isn’t as robust at Minority Serving Institutions (MSI), making building a diverse workforce pipeline and inclusive research collaborations challenging. But Georgia Tech is building MSI partnerships and recently hosted its first research collaboration forum specifically to develop these relationships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Nearly 170 attendees from government, industry, national labs, and other universities gathered on the Georgia Tech campus Nov. 7 – 8. The research forum featured keynotes, panels, and breakout sessions divided by research area to develop the partnerships necessary for meaningful collaboration. https://lnkd.in/gnbsRg3z

In the UK's quest to become a science and technology superpower by 2030, the capital is leading the charge with a “quickly growing life sciences industry that is rapidly outstripping European competitor cities, and ready to compete with US hubs”. So reads the executive summary of MedCity #LondonLab Showcase report, published just a few days ago.   Of course, there is much more to the UK's #lifescience offering than just London, but here are some convincing reasons for loving the capital (whether or not you're a Londoner): 1) The fastest growing sectors within life sciences in London include:  - Digital health: there is combined value of #MedTech companies in London in excess of $2.5bn - Advance therapies: London is home to some of the most advanced therapy companies in Europe - AI in healthcare: there are more #AI focused life sciences companies in London than anywhere else in the world 2) London has received more #VC funding into its life sciences companies than any other European city, raising more than Oxford and Cambridge combined, and more than Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin (combined). 3) London is home to 3 of the global top 15 universities for life sciences, including Imperial College London (ranked #1 in Europe and #2 globally). 4) Life sciences spin outs and start up companies are founded at a rate of 90 per year in London. There were also some interesting findings about what features are considered most important by occupiers when choosing lab locations, ranking them as follows: (1) how R&D intensive the surrounding area is; (2) the proximity of a university; (3) the proximity of transport connections; (4) the proximity of a hospital; and (5) the general business district. Also, the changing provision of lab facilities and amenities was considered. There is expected to be: - a shift towards an increased proportion of dry labs, and additional amenities such as autoclaves, bookable lab space, lab managers and shared lab equipment;  - a slight decrease in hot desks, bookable meeting rooms, communal areas and lab-enabled spaces; - a trend to increase provision of shared research facilities and fully equipped labs. An overall excellent report with some insightful data sets and case studies, including from REEF's #Tribeca London in the #KnowledgeQuarter, ARC West London in the White City Innovation District, British Land's Regent's Place and Triton Square developments, Pioneer Group's Victoria House in Bloomsbury Square, and Mitsui Fudosan / Stanhope PLC's extension of the #BritishLibrary.
