Carrot, stick, jackass... Okay, but what does that have to do with how people perform at work / in the industry, and more specifically how we reward and recognise them? Get to the point Sham! Okay, give me a minute... I keep seeing awards and dinners for star performers and how businesses seem to want to find the very best of the best - the few... even when these businesses are made up of many... surely a business made up of stars, top performers, legends and whatever else you want to call them, would do even better if the focus was on finding out how to unlock performance for the many? Maybe I'm a lone voice but I always a had niggly feeling that pitting team members against each other to find the subjective 'best', probably does more harm than good? How does this really improve performance? except for the 'winner' and a few motivated to become the next winner? Maybe I'm a lone voice but I always wondered why I was being asked to nominate my colleagues for 'free' awards, but then pay for a table to attend the event? Or gracefully accept the position of a judge at one of these events... for a fee or course... I get that things can't all be free but there must be a better way to monetise / sponsor these 'celebrations'... Maybe I'm a lone voice but when a conference producer contacts me to jump on stage and wow the audience with all of my knowledge gained over the years, that I expect to be paid. I mean, you are charging people to attend and charging suppliers and partners to be there, so you clearly have a budget... Maybe I'm a lone voice but when I see a top 50 list of the very best in X industry, and can only count a few that have walked the walk, I'm left scratching my head as to the value of these lists? And with that, you probably won't see me at any awards, be a judge, make a top whatever list or jump on any stages any time soon. But if you do?
