Are you raising too fast? I keep seeing posts from legal tech companies raising very large rounds in rapid succession. I am two-time founder. While I love building companies, I build them to sell them. From a pure investment perspective, I trust myself to create super alpha moment over random investments in the market. Every time you raise capital, you are generally diluting your ownership interest and in many cases limiting your ability to exit. In today news, Harvey raised $100 m at a 1.5 billion valuation. This means that the Harvey team needs to get ARR past $150m to $250m in revenue (6x to 10x valuation) for the new investors to break even. Real estate joint ventures provide attractive opportunities for operation and investment, but there are some pitfalls, which are covered in this article my partner, David Pratt, and I authored and which is published in the October issue of the Practical Lawyer.

I'm not sure what was going on prior to 2018, but it is great to see that Vault has ranked Cooley LLP as the best law firm for Emerging Companies and Venture Capital for the sixth year in a row (as well as the best law firm for Privacy and Data Security for the fourth year in a row). This is particularly meaningful for two reasons: 1. This is from the Vault survey of associates at peer law firms, so is validation from those who work on the other side of the table from us on deals--rating the firms that they see the most, and the firms that they perceive as having the strongest expertise in the area. 2. The results are a complete blow-out. Cooley was named by 59.6% of survey respondents, far higher than all of the usual suspect competitors (who are at 31.3%, 25.2%, 21.9% and 18.0%, respectively). Nice to see the recognition!

Another US law firm launching in London with a proven Private Equity heavy weight. Leading with PE points to the international nature of the PE market and the need to shore up PE in Europe in order to maintain or increase market share in the domestic US market. It is also one of the least rate sensitive areas which appeals to US law firms.
