Afternoon science break... A 'connectome' is a map of the neurons and the detailed circuitry of neural pathways within it'...basically how all the neurons talk to each other--both directly and indirectly. Neuropeptides allow communication between neurons that aren't 'close' to each other. Neuropeptides and their receptors are a 'hot' area of research--especially for the development of neuroactive drugs to deal with various neurological disorders...a problem--how they work at the broad 'network' level is usually poorly understood. Researchers have now generated the first map showing how every neuron within the nematode C. elegans communicates with each other via neuropeptide signalling. They managed to map over 31,000 neuropeptide interactions that involved all 302 neurons of the worm--showing where each neuropeptide and receptor acts in the nervous system of the worm. While we have significantly more neurons than the nematode--this give a starting point to try to start understanding the 'connectome' for certain diseases/disorders. As there is nothing 'simple' in the way cells talk to one another--especially when communicating via a 'long-distance'. Neuroscientists have discovered a new type of #hybrid brain cell, that demonstrates qualities of both #neurons and #glialcells. Traditionally, #braincells are categorised into two types, neurons and glial cells, or #glia. Neurons were considered to be responsible for communication with other neurons via #synaptic transmission, whereas glial cells were believed to have a supporting structural, energetic and immune function. Astrocytes are glial cells found in the close vicinity of #synapses, the gaps between neurons across which information is transmitted via neurotransmitters. The study revealed clusters of #astrocytes capable of releasing #glutamate, the most common #neurotransmitter in the #brain, to take part in synaptic transmission. The researchers have named these cells glutamatergic astrocytes, and their existence could have a profound effect on our understanding of #braindisorders. In the same study, disruption of these cells was shown to affect memory consolidation and movement control, with possible implications in #epilepsy, #parkinsons and #alzheimers.
