Individual clubs are taking the lead on environmental sustainability in the absence of a league-wide strategy. With little direction from the Premier League itself, clubs have taken significant steps towards Net Zero which sports organisations can learn from through Sport Positive's comprehensive report but, there is still a lot of room for improvement. To implement a league-wide strategy, the Premier League has to make the most of its #governance role to amplify the steps taken by the clubs excelling in this area to spread learnings across the league and further afield.

The global carbon markets have not been working effectively—if at all. That has created an opportunity for sports organizations who have embarked on large-scale green initiatives to incrementally grow partnership revenues. The English Premier League is not only the epicenter of world-class football but is also stepping up its game in environmental stewardship. In a landmark move, the league has announced a set of new environmental commitments aimed at reducing its carbon footprint and promoting #sustainability. Let’s explore the four key measures outlined in the commitment and their significance in shaping the future of football and environmental action.

England’s Premier League football clubs are stepping up their game for sustainability. By the end of next season, every club will have its own environmental sustainability policy in place, marking a significant move towards a greener future for football. This commitment, mandated by the Premier League, aims to set a minimum standard of sustainable action across all clubs and the League. Building on existing progress, these policies will tackle environmental impact head-on, ensuring our beloved sport plays its part in protecting our planet. Each club will appoint a designated senior employee to lead the charge on sustainability initiatives, ensuring accountability and progress. By the end of the 2025/26 season, all clubs will establish comprehensive greenhouse gas emissions datasets, covering Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. This data will pave the way for informed decision-making and targeted action to further reduce our environmental impact.
