France Digitale’s latest report on the genAI value chain in Europe indicates that the most competitive level of the supply chain is found at the applications layer, where there is a profusion of dynamic startups. Higher value is attributed to specialized applications, as opposed to generalist solutions, due to the dominance of some already well-established players at the chip, infrastructure and even foundational model layers. As the cofounder of a vertical (specialized) AI company, I couldn’t agree more :) At this critical point in the supply chain, startups face a double challenge: developing applications that stand out from the crowd, and distributing them in the face of well-established incumbents or freshly funded, AI-native competitors (both challenges we have faced at Explain).
