Thank you Amy Zipf, RN, PhD for all the coordination and work you put into this July 2023 Cohort. It was a pleasure to be included in the celebration and final new grad residency meeting today. Thank you Elaine Cournean for the beautiful reminder of being mindful and present in the moments. One person asked for advice of what we wish we had known or remembered or wanted to share, and I think they are great reminders for all: 1. Get Involved- at the unit or hospital level. 2. Nurses are an important part of patient safety, quality, and patient experience. 3. Stay curious - don’t be afraid to ask questions, learn, or ask “is this still the best practice?” 4. Remember humanity, we are all people first. Treat everyone with kindness and treat the person first. 5. Med-surg is not a starting point. Its a full specialty on its own. Its ok to like Med-Surg and grow your practice in that area, thats how we become experts in areas. 6. Give yourself grace - you’re learning a lot fast, you will make mistakes, give yourself grace to acknowledge how far you have come. I have been inspired by the creativity, energy and collaboration our community has shown in addressing physician shortages and supporting medical trainees. Yet more is needed: federal funding of the Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education Program- which trains nearly half of all pediatricians- lapsed late last year. The lapse comes as Congress aims to tie funding approval to restricting the forms of care pediatric training programs can provide. Regardless of our politics, these restriction have the power to derail the education of the next generation of our nation’s pediatricians and diminish care for the nation’s children. What are ways that we can go beyond political ideology to ensure that we continue to improve healthcare access while valuing the next generation of physicians? #healthcare #healthcareleadership #physicianburnout

For all my medical students and residents out there: I wish someone told me how to study in medical school and residency to RETAIN practical knowledge that I could implement into practice. Not memorize random facts that I couldn't ground in the real world. (sorry medical school but you emphasize that too much imo) Here's the strategy I landed on. Assess the patients you saw that day (in the hospital, clinic, OR etc). Pick 1 case. It can only be ONE. Analyze the case. Think about what the attending physician did (questions asked, work up, orders, treatment plans). Read UptoDate and corroborate your experience. Make Anki cards. (spaced repetition is legit homey 😉) Now repeat this every day. Seems too narrow at first glance... ...but by the end of one year you'll have learned 365 topics. Pretty INSANE amount of knowledge acquisition in a year. I've been doing this since day 1, year 1 of residency. I wish I had been doing this since medical school. PS: This is crucial to be a good primary care physician. There is just so much to know in primary care. #medicalschool #residency #medicine #physicians #primarycare
