During phone screens with candidates, I often hear "I don't want to toot my own horn" and this has always puzzled me. A phone screen and interview is THE perfect moment for you to toot that horn! I love hearing people who are proud of their accomplishments. Tell me what you've done and how it relates to the position. Brag about yourself! Tell me why you are the one we should choose. Toot your horn loud and long!

One question I ask candidates, in exactly the same words, after EVERY interview for 20 years.... How did they leave it with you? Without fail. Because I know how & when to follow it up. And I can usually interpret something from the answer.

Interviewing for a job is a source of stress for a lot of professionals. The PARL framework, outlined in the article below, provides a great framework for answering some of the toughest questions. I have always found prepping ahead of time by thinking through some great examples to share helps keep it top of mind for me during the interview, especially when nerves can take over unexpectedly. https://ow.ly/y7KT30sF7uR

Following up on interviews is key. It shows that you appreciate their time and reiterates your interest in their company. When there are handfuls of applicants being interviewed, it can really set you apart from the rest. 🎯
The subject of thank you emails after an interview has come up 3 times this week so need to address. Candidates, a Thank You email goes a long long way with the folks you interview with. It’s not outdated or old fashioned. And……folks who are interviewing candidates. When someone does send you a thank you, please acknowledge with a simple You’re Welcome for their time! Good manners never go out of style! Happy weekend!

Some important questions to ask at the end of a first interview (from someone who has been doing A LOT of interviewing lately!): ❓ What should I expect the rest of the process to look like? ❓ Is there a role actually available? Is the opening contingent on the firm obtaining a new business contract? ❓ What is the timeline for filling the role? ❓ When will I be hearing back about next steps? (This one is good to ask at each stage, in my opinion.) If the recruiter and/or staff you're speaking with can't or won't answer these questions, it might be red flag!

How to shake off the interview nerves. Understand that good preparation is the best cure of all for nerves. Go in the door feeling relatively bulletproof, confident that you can deal with whatever comes at you in there. Understand that what many of us were told in school (sit still, plant your feet on the floor and fold your arms on your lap) is not good advice. We need to move to burn off energy. In all likelihood, you can’t walk around the room during interview, but you can gesticulate with your hands, you can look left and right at the interview panel and you can sit forward and sit back at different times as you become animated in the conversation. Stop expecting miracles. You will not be word perfect on the day. When you chat, you will need to take thinking time and there will be an occasional quiver in your voice, an er and an um, and all of that is the essence of your communication style. Accept it and move on. Focus on what matters: the value you can bring to the role. #JobInterview #InterviewPrep

I recently came across an interesting evaluation method for job candidates - the coffee cup test! I was captivated by how a seemingly simple act of observing how someone handles a cup of coffee - not before or during an interview, but at the end of it, can provide insights into their personality, character traits, and, most importantly, their attitude! This video explains the significance of the test from this boss's perspective. To the hiring managers in my LinkedIn network....would you do it?
