Yesterday I had the opportunity to do one of my favorite things in my job: meet prospective students & teach a mock class with them.
I chose to teach a lesson that's a preview of my First-Year Seminar about Star Wars & cultural theory, using a simple image analysis of the original Star Wars poster (see it in the link). Usually, I show the poster, ask them to imagine seeing it for the first time in 1977 without any knowledge of Star Wars, & brainstorm about what they observe in the poster & what it might tell us about the movie. Within minutes, they were talking about binaries, bodies, objectification, "the gaze"--all their doing! It was a fantastic, dynamic class, & even though we went for 40 minutes, we could have gone for another hour easily. Then I got to connect with the prospective students & parents at lunch. What a fantastic experience! Here's hoping I see some of the same faces as first-years in the fall.

Great presentation today ... riveting for someone like me ... can't wait to learn more.
