5 Career Paths for Corporate GenXers When Retirement Isn’t an Option In light of all the chaos in the corporate world, I thought I'd share the five most viable career paths for GenXers: 1. Stay in Corporate: You can try to dodge layoffs, navigate the corporate tactics, and hold on to that paycheck. But how long can you keep doing this? Can you afford to, or even want to, retire this way? 2. Start a Solo Business: This is my focus area. You can monetize your corporate experience in various ways, such as fractional work, consulting, coaching, or advisory roles. 3. Start a Traditional Business: This involves employees and offering products or services. It’s a more hands-on approach but can be rewarding. This may require capital. 4. Buy/Invest in a Franchise: Think of it as a business in a box. Franchises provide a structured system and support, making it a less risky option. There is an upfront cost but does minimize the setup time. 5. Buy a Business: If you have the capital, many businesses are available for purchase, including family-owned ones. Been posting for a while. If you don’t know me, here’s an introduction. I grew up in a town of nomads, northwest of the Sahara desert. I made 3 significant mistakes last year as the CEO of Lifeworks. However, I believe we can learn more from our mistakes than our successes. 2023 was an excellent year for Lifeworks, but I made a few missteps. 1/ Changing our core messaging to win new advisors Last year was the first year I focused on recruiting independent advisors for our platform. Advisors who were interested in joining Lifeworks would say: “Ron I love what you guys built and your vision for the future. However, can I change (the fee schedule, marketing message, client service model, etc..) or do something different if I join your firm?” What they were saying was, I want to grow my firm like you grew yours. But I don’t want to do it the same way you did. I don’t like saying “no.” However, some of those changes or differences went against what I knew worked and how I believed clients should be served. I spent too much time trying to be flexible and accommodate those requests. Instead, I should have just said, “What we built at Lifeworks isn’t for every advisor, and that is ok. If you want to charge a different fee or serve your clients differently than we do, there are lots of options out there. But if you want to deliver better client outcomes and have the same rapid growth we experienced at Lifeworks, follow our playbook.” Offering some flexibility is ok, but deviating from what you know works to accommodate a client or advisor who wants something different can bog your entire company down. 2/ Pausing our B2C digital marketing campaigns while focusing on recruiting and building our software. We grew from zero to $250M of AUM in five years by leveraging paid media channels to win new clients. As I shifted my focus to recruiting advisors, I lost sight that the biggest problem most advisors face is acquiring new clients. We had a winning marketing strategy, and instead of turning it off, I should have hit the accelerator. 3/ Stopping our internship hiring in 2023 Before 2023, we took college seniors with finance degrees and developed them into financial advisors from the ground up. We taught them the business while they worked on their CFP designations. Our plan was simple and working: Build a pipeline of young, talented college students interested in becoming financial advisors. Talent wars are already heating up due to the lack of Advisors in the space, so it’s my job as the CEO to invest in our future. The lesson: 1) Don’t compromise your winning strategy. When you know what works, double down on that strategy. 2) Never turn off business development. It takes 10x more effort to restart. 3) Never stop building and developing your future talent. Investing in great teams is like investing in the market. It is often hard, and you don’t see the payoff quickly. But the rewards are like compounded interest. PS. How my first $10k month bought me a date with my wife and changed my business forever: It was 2021. I quit my 10-year corporate job. I started my own agency. But things haven’t been easy. - Leads were hard to come by - Worked only with low-ticket clients - Uncertainty was killing my hopes I sat at my desk filled with dread. Empty coffee cup. She and I ended the year with a staycation. In hindsight, $10k was more than just the money.  It was a validation: - It proved to me that I can. - It showed I was right to quit my job. - It revealed what’s possible with my business. Exactly 1 year and 1 day ago, I was laid off. I'm thankful for the lessons it has taught me. Here is what I've learned: 1️⃣ It's not personal. It's business. As lame as it sounds, and as bad as it feels, getting laid off is about business needs. You can choose to take it personally, or simply deal with the reality. 2️⃣ Sometimes you have to get pushed out of the nest to fly. To be honest, I never would have left Microsoft on my own... Great people. Great products. Great pay. The work was not aligned with my purpose, but everything else was great. The two voices in my head were going back and forth: "Just suck up the lack of fulfillment and keep on going," and, "This is not what you were meant to do. You can't help the people you want to help by staying here." 3️⃣ Starting a business is the ultimate personal development vehicle. Stress, time-management, learning, work/life balance, energy, focus, purpose, communication... and on and on. Each day there is new opportunity to practice personal development. Being a business owner brings a different level of stress. 4️⃣ Everything you want is on the other side of fear. I don't have everything figured out (see lesson 3). But being forced into an uncomfortable position creates a choice - Rise, or don't. For me, there is only one correct response. Take action despite the fear. Growth occurs outside the comfort zone, so get comfortable being uncomfortable. 5️⃣ Purpose matters. Here's a common thought I hear from my clients, "I could be doing more. I was meant for more." This is a sign that your work and purpose are misaligned. I felt this way for YEARS. But now, that feeling is gone. Work and purpose are aligned. I don't have everything figured out, and starting a business is tough. But... we have the power to choose our attitude, take action despite our fear, and align our actions with our purpose. I am thankful I was laid off. It forced me to step outside of the cozy cocoon and grow. Now it's time to get some.

Back in early 2023, I made a pretty bold move. I sold off my window cleaning business and traded it for a regular job. Sounds like a step backward, right? Well, financially, it definitely was. I went from raking in $10k a month to scraping by on $1.5k. So why in the world would I do that? Let me tell you. When I was running my own company, I was clueless when it came to the technical stuff. Marketing? Sales? Forget about it. But deep down, I knew I had to master these skills if I wanted to turn my business dreams into reality. Sure, window cleaning brought in easy money, especially for a young 18/19-year-old like me. But it wasn't my passion. I had to make a tough choice: prioritize learning or stick with what was comfortable and profitable. So, I sold the business, took up a job (not for the paycheck, but for the knowledge), and soaked up everything I could. After three months, I quit and went back to working for myself. For the next seven months, I didn't earn a dime. Instead, I invested in myself, learning new skills, seeking guidance from mentors, and exploring new opportunities. Many of my friends and family thought I was crazy for giving up a lucrative business. But what they didn't realize was that sticking with it would have kept me from growing and earning even more. Today, I couldn't be happier with the path I chose. I'm sharper, more skilled, and building the company of my dreams and I can work from wherever I want. It wasn't easy, but it was definitely worth it.
