Have you heard of wireless charging #roads? Before you scoff, consider that for properly equipped buses these can enable: 1. Less idle time spent charging 2. Smaller EV batteries, which result in: 3. Lower vehicle cost (& battery replacement $) 4. Lower vehicle weight, which also results in: 5. Shorter stopping distances (safer for pedestrians) 6. Less tire wear (fewer particulates) All of that on top of the fact that EV buses operate quietly and have zero tailpipe emissions in the communities and corridors they serve. While this type of #electrifiedinfrastructure will not make sense for all roads or all electric vehicles, city buses and shuttles with fixed routes are a compelling case to test. The wireless EV charging concept is rapidly evolving. The latest development out of Indiana is particularly interesting because it includes semi trucks. The Indiana DOT has partnered with Purdue University (where my youngest son is studying engineering!). They’re developing a section of highway that could charge electric vehicles, including electric semitrucks, while driving 65 MPH. Coils beneath the pavement emit energy through a magnetic field that’s transmitted to coils that are installed in the electric vehicles. Wireless charging is such an enabler because it charges while the vehicle is in motion, requiring no effort from the driver. But up until now, we’ve only seen such charging “pads” equipped to support personal vehicles, not big trucks. As we move towards mass adoption — and Net Zero — we have to pour our efforts into electrifying fleets, which account for about a fourth of transportation emissions. The Michigan Department of Transportation and City of Detroit opened a segment of 14th Street near Michigan Central Station with inductive-charging coils - the nation’s first wireless charging infrastructure on a public road! The project is meant to test the technology's performance in real-world conditions and only EVs equipped with a special receiver can charge.
