In one of the more fulfilling projects of the year, a group of senior #MedEd scholars at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, including Terry Kind & Katherine C. Chretien (who is now at The Johns Hopkins University), mentored an extremely talented GW medical student, Jacob Nasser. Jacob did the heavy lifting in our paper that examined the characteristics of students applying to competitive surgical residencies. With its vote on February 13, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents authorized The University of Georgia to establish a new independent School of Medicine in Athens. The initiation of a school of medicine at Georgia’s flagship university comes at a time when the state faces a significant shortage of medical professionals. In recent years, Georgia’s population has surged to approximately 11 million residents, straining existing medical infrastructure and resulting in longer wait times for appointments and reduced access to care. Georgia—the nation’s eighth largest state—is forecasted to experience further population growth in the coming years, while nearly one-third of the state’s physicians are nearing retirement. medicine.uga.edu/

I asked myself why 🤔 Eventually, I think that this is because it conveys such an extraordinary message of - generosity - social inclusion - intergenerational solidarity - the power of education in creating self-empowerment and dignity - the multiplier effect of health-care workers on human health as a pre-requisite for well-being.
