$12 billion initiative to advance #womenshealth research! Following the announcement in the State of the Union address, President Biden yesterday issued an executive order to create a Fund for Women’s Health Research at The National Institutes of Health. More than twenty tasks and commitments for federal agencies are outlined, including multidisciplinary research investment by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and establishing a centralized NIH funding platform for women's health. #Privatesector innovation is to be supported through additional federal investments. FDA is addressing gaps in research and availability of products for diseases and conditions that primarily impact women or where scientific considerations may be different for women, while NIH is gearing up to launch a dedicated initiative for biomarker discovery, notably targeting endometriosis. Additionally, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS are bolstering data collection efforts to deepen the understanding of women's health. The executive order shows strong commitment behind the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research launched in November 2023, bringing the Federal government, private, and philanthropic sectors together to spur innovation, unleash investment to close research gaps, and improve women’s health. Happy Saturday! Here's what happened on the Health Tech Talk Show yesterday! Lisa, Melissa Denino and I had some excellent technical difficulties. Thank you for our loyal fan base who found their way to our Vimeo platform, which does always work. News of the week - We had an awesome time at Darshak Sanghavi's Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) HEROES Program proposer's day. We love this program and we want it to work - it's initial focus is on our favorite problems: on opioid overdoses, alcohol-related harms, maternal health and cardiovascular disease. Go to Brendan Keeler's Flexpa webinar on all the acronyms involved in interoperability! Link in comments. Mark Cuban shouted out about a direct contracting play. Do we like direct contracting? Yes we do! And congratulations to the two new #TEFCA #QHINs recognized this week, CommonWell Health Alliance and Kno2. We like both of these organizations and shout out to friends Paul Wilder and Jon Elwell for these accomplishments! We had illustrious guest Leslie Kirk, CEO of Innsena, on the show to talk to us about our recent partnership with the CancerX Moonshot. You can read all about our "why" in comments, Matthew Holt let us op-ed our reasons on The Health Care Blog. But definitely watch this segment where Leslie tells us about her mom's battle with stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, discovered after a large tumor burst in her stomach. Her diagnosis and subsequent battle financially devastated her, and Leslie laid out the challenges involved in becoming her mom's caretaker. Cancer treatment and the non-logical navigation patients need to do to get care ended up being a theme of our show, thanks to improv by our next guest Caleb Manscill of Vyne. He talked to us about how we can solve some of the problems in healthcare, both for patients and providers, by automating some of the ridiculous processes found in the healthcare system. He used cancer as an example--and that for someone like Leslie's mom, also suffering from vision loss, filling out the same information on a paper form visit after visit does affect access. Caleb told us that yeah, most "AI in healthcare" is really machine learning--and even then, a lot of is just automation. What did we learn? AI in healthcare = a toaster. I love this. Best new friend of JPM2024 Lauren A. of Mesh Health Solutions popped in to whisper sweet nothings about #priorauthorization into Lisa's ear. Shout out to Alexandra Mugge for getting this rule out and done, IT'S GOOD FOR AMERICA! Lauren's company, Mesh Health Solutions, has just come out of stealth and aims to simplify the prior auth process and improve the approach to utilization management for members. Boom. Cancer treatment popped up again as our example here--many patients have to go through onerous and confusion prior auth processes to get the care they need. This utilization management tactic truly does negatively impact patient outcomes. https://lnkd.in/eehvHdaa

As the burden of #cancer in women increases globally, there is an urgent need to integrate #HealthLiteracy at all levels of healthcare. 📚 To advance efforts, MSD, the Global Health Literacy Academy represented by Kristine Sørensen 🍀 and Urška Košir, hosted a roundtable on the sidelines of the 77th World Health Assembly (#WHA77), to look, discuss and validate the existing evidence on the key health literacy determinants in women’s cancers. 💡MSD’s Julia Spencer was joined by several experts to discuss the priority research and policy recommendations that will address barriers to health literacy in women facing women’s cancer. Together, we are working to empower individuals to navigate complex healthcare information and systems.

Do you want to help #acromegaly patients get diagnosed sooner? Read on for an opportunity to participate in a study led by St. Michael’s Unity Health Toronto. ⤵️ We know that earlier diagnosis usually improves outcomes and quality of life. Please take part in our international research study that uses computer technology to try to diagnose patients sooner by detecting the earliest features of acromegaly. We are looking for individuals with acromegaly (including gigantism) or other types of pituitary adenomas/tumours to participate. Your participation in this study is critical to help develop the most accurate tools for diagnosis and greatly improve the quality of life of future patients. In this study, you will be asked to upload your photographs and complete a questionnaire, for use in a machine learning analysis. You can access the study using the link provided below. If you have questions about taking part in this study, you can send an email to the research team at [email protected] or telephone at 001-416-864-5312.
