Incentives are powerful—they shape behavior in ways we often don't fully appreciate. This post found me at the perfect time because I've been reflecting on how incentive systems influence our actions, especially when they prioritize profits over people. It's a reminder that when the wrong incentives are valued, individuals may find themselves torn between what they feel compelled to do to 'provide for their family' and what aligns with their moral compass. One great example (other than the one below) is the scandal in 2016 when it was revealed that thousands of employees of Wells Fargo had opened millions of unauthorized accounts without customers' consent. This was done to meet the aggressive sales targets set by the bank, driven by incentives tied to the number of accounts opened. The scandal led to significant fines, a loss of customer trust, and major changes in leadership at Wells Fargo. INCENTIVES MATTER. I encourage you all to: 1. Reflect on what drives you: What incentives influence your decisions and behavior? 2. Evaluate the incentives you promote: Do they align with your personal/company mission and values? 3. Revise your approach: Make changes where needed to ensure the incentives you value and promote lead to positive outcomes for yourself and those around you.
