Join MCEA and ask your legislators to support fixing Minnesota's definition of "public waters" to ensure that all waterways in the state are protected. Take Action - https://lnkd.in/gcnCKy_b This legislative session, a bill was introduced to help protect all public waters in Minnesota, which is especially critical now that the federal government has narrowed the definition of waters that are protected under federal jurisdiction. HF 3385 (Pursell) / SF 3558 (Kunesh) are simple, common-sense laws that would put the Minnesota Legislature on record that the current definition of a public water in statute applies to every river, stream, and lake in Minnesota. Public waterways deserve protection even if they are not listed on the "Public Waters Inventory," a 1980's list and map that attempted to document public waters in the state. NEHA team developing and improving professional skill sets to enhance EH practice

I was interviewed by the Slough Observer about a Community Led Research Project into littering in the town, working with the Slough Anti-Litter Society and other researchers from Henley Business School and Law Department. Dr Alice Mpofu-Coles is helping with the research. She said: "I think littering is a thing all over the country. If you look at councils across the country, they are looking at littering being a major issue.  "We are doing this research to find out why people litter.  "Is it a group mentality, is it the dynamics of where you live if you live in an area with a lot of litter? We want to know what is happening, but also strengthen the community and the social responsibility. Lead exposure is a health, education and racial justice issue for our kids. AB 1851, co-sponsored by Children Now and Environmental Working Group, would implement a pilot program to test for lead in school drinking water. We have got to do better than this! As many schools around the country open this week to students, we must find ways to tackle this problem. As the article points out, "many school buildings have aging infrastructure that is more likely to leach lead into the water. And children are the most vulnerable to the harmful effects of lead poisoning. But despite an increased awareness of the danger posed by lead in water, there is no national mandate that requires testing drinking water in schools and child-care facilities. As of 2021, a report found that only 18 states and the District of Columbia had some kind of requirement for school testing." "Long-term lead consumption can have debilitating and lifelong effects on children, including brain and nervous system damage; slow development; and hearing, speech and behavior issues, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Lead exposure also poses risks during pregnancy because the highly toxic contaminant can pass from mother to fetus, seeping into the placenta and the fetus's growing bones and teeth, permanently affecting development." While a federal mandate is important, why can't we solve this at the local level? Why can't we stop the bickering over books and curriculums and, instead, collectively address aging infrastructure so the kids have a safe place to learn?
