As our entire global wine industry goes through a much needed (necessary) reboot, it’s not only the the foundations of geographic “places” that need to be evaluated, but every idea and idealogy that impacts the trade. What needs to be rebooted? (Not a complete list of necessarily in this order nor all having requirement for regulatory consideration); 1) Focal points of elitism in AVA/Appelation Systems; 2) Marketing and authenticity in advertising ethics considerations (as the new consumer smells a rat faster than you can say “Reserve” of “Made in France” or “Napa”) 3) #subsidy considerations on the impact of supply imbalances internationally; 4) #Internationaltradepolicy and the concepts of “free and fair trade” ….among many other topics (please suggest in comments) #winemakersforum #techtalk4wine #legacy #finewine #wineindustry
Alexandre de Lur Saluces may have hated his inclusion (indeed the existence) of the book Noble Rot, which told the story of the hostile takeover of one of Bordeaux’s most revered and ancient estates, but it did a huge amount to stir interest again in a wine appellation that has been in danger over the past century of being eclipsed by shinier names. Few people did as much to shine a light on Sauternes as Lur Saluces, who died on July 24, 2023, at the age of 89. He was a passionate defender of this stubbornly masochistic style of winemaking, where the noble rot ensures grapes with tiny yields that have to be treated entirely by hand, and the vagaries of the weather mean entire vintages are regularly under threat. From the time he took over from his uncle Bernard de Lur Saluces at Château dYquem in 1968, until his last moments at Château de Fargues in 2023, he did everything possible to uphold the importance of not only his own family estates but the appellation of Sauternes and Bordeaux itself. For 36 years he was the director – always the epitome of elegance, with a perfect suit and tie that could give Michael Broadbent a run for his money – of Yquem, the 1855 classification’s only Premier Cru Supérieur, or First Growth Superior, that had been in his family since 1785. His son Philippe de Lur Saluces remembers how the Hungarian-born London importer Akos Forczek once boasted to him ‘Alexandre, we had a Suduiraut ‘28 yeserday, it was amazing!’. ‘My father simply replied, conspicuously unimpressed: ‘1928? Oh… ‘ with a clear emphasis on nineteen. He was one of the very few men who could seriously pull off this joke’. Full obituary on the site this #newcontentthursday, free to read. France and their chateaus. The French word château denotes buildings as diverse as a medieval fortress, a Renaissance palace and a fine 19th-century country house. If you take a look at a French wine bottle, it’ll be likely you’ll see a name with the word ‘chateau’ printed on the label. Why and how then did wine come to be associated with chateaus? Back in those days, a chateau will be associated with the nobles or the high society of a particular land. Some are even directly owned by the royals themselves. A château was historically supported by its terres (lands). There are many estates with true châteaux on them in the Bordeaux wine regions, but it is customary for any wine-producing estate since the 19th century, no matter how humble, to prefix its name with "Château". This term became the default way of designating an estate in Bordeaux, in the same way that Domaine did in Burgundy. Both Château and Domaine are aristocratic in implication, but Bordeaux had a better claim to the association: nobles had owned Bordeaux's best vineyards for centuries. Most of Burgundy's best vineyards, in contrast, had been owned by the Church. The term Château became a permanent verbal fixture in Bordeaux, and it was emulated in other French regions and outside France. The winery denomination Château is now protected by French law, and confirmed in 1981 by European Union law, as "traditional appellation". The term Château may be used only if two conditions are fulfilled: - The wine concerned have to be made exclusively from grapes harvested from wine belonging to that vineyard, - The wine-making process was carried out there. Many of these Chateaus are open for tours. Maybe we shall plan a trip "Around the Chateaus in 7days!".

Prowein 2024. What can be said other than that it was slow? The halls were filled with comments saying 'it's too expensive; vinexpo is better; the hotels in Paris are cheaper; the flights to Paris are cheaper and more abbundant; Paris is more fun than Düsseldorf (and let's not forget that for the second year in a row there were strikes that made things more difficult.) I tend to differ in this opinion. It's not that Vinexpo is better than Vinitaly or Prowein or otherwise. The real problem is that the wine business only needs one major international fair per year...not three. I don't care where this fair is. Another option is that they give wineries the opportunities to sign up every other year rather than every year. The fair organizer need to realize that their ultimate client is the fairgoer. I understand that a lot of money enters into the city thanks to Vinitaly/Prowein/Vinexpo, but if the fair doesn't have a positive cost benefit, then we fairgoers will invest in other ways. If they don't give us more options to increase our investments, then we will abandon them. We are in a post covid world and ready to rethink our investments. #prowein #vinitaly #vinexpo #dusseldorf

Vendimia: A journey from Earth to Glass 💚🤍💚 In the heart of Andalucia, a timeless spectacle unfolds each year - the vibrant celebration of the vendimia, the grape harvest. This cherished tradition is a vivid reflection of the region's rich history, deep-rooted culture, and a fascinating winemaking process. As clusters of ripe grapes adorn the vineyards, locals gather with a palpable sense of excitement. One captivating element of this age-old practice is the stomping of grapes with feet - a practice passed down through generations. While modern methods have brought efficiency to winemaking, this age-old technique endures for its symbolic value and distinct contributions to the process 🍇 Why use feet? Beyond its romantic allure, foot stomping offers a gentle, natural way to extract juice from the grapes, preserving their essential flavors and characteristics. The rhythmic dance of feet not only releases the precious liquid but also connects participants with the land and the fruit it bears. It's a visceral reminder that wine is not just a beverage; it's a labor of love, a journey from earth to glass 🍷 As the sun sets and the air fills with the aroma of grapes, laughter, and camaraderie, the vendimia becomes a time to honor heritage, relish in unity, and toast to the promise of exceptional wines. It's a tapestry where tradition, community, and craftsmanship entwine, leaving an indelible mark on the culture of Andalucia 🇪🇸 #villasfincas #traditions #andalucia
