A new drug to help reoccurring migraines could soon be available on the NHS. The drug Atogepant could help benefit up to 170,000 people in England, especially for those who have no responded well to other medications or cannot have injections. Chronic migraines can be very debilitating for sufferers and come with other symptoms such as dizziness, sensitivity to light and difficulty speaking. The NHS estimates that around 6 million people suffer with migraines in the UK, with women experiencing them more than men. Article in BBC News this week (link below) highlighting weight regain when people stop taking weight-loss drugs. Virta Health published a study earlier this year showing sustained weight loss at 6 and 12 mos. post deprescription. Today's Nuffield Trust report paints a troubling picture of widespread medication shortages, with epilepsy drugs among those most badly affected. It's in line with our survey, where many of you told us about the stress, anxiety and inconvenience you're regularly facing just to get your prescription filled, and it's in line with the huge volume of calls to our helpline recently from people who are worried about having to switch or ration their medication if their supplies run low. They want answers, and so do we. We're calling for a meeting with Health Secretary Victoria Atkins and an urgent review to fix the supply chain. Nicola Swanborough, our Head of External Affairs, said: “Without a constant supply of the right drug at the right dose, a person risks a breakthrough seizure which can instantly cost them their driving licence, impacting both employment and education. “Just the stress of not knowing whether you are going to be able to access your medication at the right dose can itself trigger a seizure. And seizures can be fatal. “Our helpline has been inundated with calls from desperate people who are having to travel miles, often visiting multiple pharmacies to try to access their medication.” We're working hard to get this sorted.
