How to donate umbilical cord blood (https://lnkd.in/gVw98znS) Traditionally, umbilical cord blood has been discarded as medical waste. In recent years, mothers also have had the option to bank their cord blood for family use – at a cost. Now thanks to the California Umbilical Cord Blood Collection Program, mothers can donate their newborns' umbilical cord blood for public use in lifesaving transplantations or research, at no cost to themselves or their insurance. All mothers giving birth at a participating hospital will be offered the opportunity to donate if staff is present and certain criteria are met, similar to the criteria for donating blood. The cord blood collection does not interfere with the birth plan and is safe for mom and baby, occurring after the birth.

Imagine a prescription drug that you need to maintain your quality of life coming with a price tag of $900....a day. Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting Lauren, a woman in her 30s living with cystic fibrosis. Lauren gave me a glimpse into the life of someone living with this disease. She shared the various tools and machines that can be used to keep her lungs and airways clear, as well as her drug regimen to help treat the symptoms that come with cystic fibrosis. One of those drugs was a game changer for many – though not all – living with cystic fibrosis when it came on the market several years ago. It's comprised of 3 pills that need to be taken daily. Without insurance or financial assistance, EACH pill’s list price can be about $300. Here's some quick math: -$300/pill x 3 pills/day = $900/day -$900/day x 365 days/year = $328,500/year This really put several things into perspective for me: 1) The need for prescription drug costs to be more closely monitored and controlled, down to the manufacturer level. We've seen similar stories with things like EpiPens and insulin. 2) The importance of making sure everyone has access to affordable health care and that those who may need it can use financial assistance programs to help cover their costs. 3) The critical need of finding a cure for diseases like cystic fibrosis, so that individuals don't need to rely on these drugs to try and manage their health. ABC is asking where our plasma comes from and the ethical conundrum of filling gaps in supply from international markets with paid donors while only supporting non remunerated donations. While plasma is processed for a high degree of safety, we cannot discount the importance of donor selection in blood safety, and if deferral means your children go without, donors will accept a higher risk. Where I think there will be most agreement is understanding who really does benefit most from immunoglobulin therapy and identification promotion alternatives. On Monday, I had the opportunity to hear JDRF International’s CEO Dr. Aaron Kowalski speak about JDRF's incredible progress in the areas of technology, human clinical trials, cell therapies and type 1 diabetes (T1D) cures. Because of you 2023 was a milestone year in our mission to find a cure for cavernous malformation! -You have helped us fund strategic research grants for non-invasive treatments and targeted drug delivery. -The Rec-994 trial is fully enrolled and ahead of schedule with more industry trials in the works. -You supported us through the development of our CCM Health Index, a tool to power research forward. Your donations has allowed us to keep the patients at the heart of what we do. Thank you! Our plans for 2024 are even bigger! We are planing to develop our own mouse colony to test treatments sooner than we otherwise could. The details of our mouse treatment testing program are being worked out, but we will likely: 1) Fund an academic laboratory to perform preliminary cell line screening of medicines with potential based on prior research understandings. 2) Perform fast mouse experiments in the academic setting to determine whether a drug is worth moving forward. 3) Take the best candidates to a commercial laboratory with facilities to grow our mouse colony and conduct extended experiments, including watching lesions change in real time using sequential MRI.
