What an honor it was to hear from Carri Lockhart yesterday! It was great to hear all about her experience in the energy industry and the passion she has for what she does. Some of the biggest lessons I took from her presentation are: ➡ Learning the fundamentals is key. The best leaders know all of the ins-and-outs of their companies, down to every detail. ➡ Own your career path— have an authentic mentor, build a network, and find executives that inspire you. ➡ Sacrifices will happen during your career. We're highlighting our interns for National Intern Day! Bryce Mayden is our intern from Hanover College and has been working with our Economic Development team this summer. 1. What is your favorite project that you've worked on at 1si so far this summer? My favorite project was researching the local economy (i.e., real GDP throughout the last 20 years, unemployment rates, housing costs, etc.) 2. What is your most memorable experience from this summer? Our everyday conversations in the office have been the most memorable experiences this summer. 3. What are your hobbies outside of work/school? My big hobby outside of work/school is soccer; I love playing pickup, training on my own, and watching games on TV.

An externship and an internship are both forms of experiential learning opportunities that allow students to gain practical, hands-on experience in a particular field or industry. 

A direct quote from the NACE Position statement: "Particularly troubling, NACE research has also found that all college students are not equitably represented in internships (Inequity in Internships, NACE, 2021). According to survey data, women, Black, Hispanic, and first-generation students were underrepresented in paid internships. In 2022, NACE followed up on that initial analysis and the internship data from 187 employers demonstrated nearly identical inequities. Again, women, Black, and Hispanic students were significantly underrepresented as a proportion of paid interns. Taken together, the research shows that white, male, and continuing generation students are disproportionally overrepresented in paid internships. Providing more paid internships for underrepresented populations will lead to greater access, opportunity, and success for participating students; help fill critical roles throughout the employment landscape; and lead to needed diversification of the workforce." Internships are a high-impact practice that colleges and universities should be paying significant attention to and identifying action steps to close equity gaps.

Our interns are a valuable asset! Now that many have graduated and moved on to their careers, they take with them knowledge and experience that gives them an advantage in the competitive commercial real estate industry. Noah Smith discusses some of the practical experience he puts into practice as an intern.

Interview with an Intern. We are pleased to introduce Payton Lester, our IP Truck summer intern from Evergreen, Colorado. Payton is participating in a multi-week summer program with IP Truck and he is half-way done. Let's hear from him. What is the biggest lesson you've learned so far being apart of the IP Truck team? I've learned that our most important resource is time. Things that people spend hours, days, months, years, thinking about most of the time can be resolved in less than and hour. So, from now on I will make that plan, make that call, do my homework, or do whatever it is I need to do, but I promise I will not waste my time and life by overthinking when I can just do it…Also coffee and diet coke are pretty dam good! What have you learned most about yourself while working with IP Truck? I have always avoided things that I don’t look forward to, or I don’t know the outcome of, but working at IP I was able to realize that I can really do anything if I put my mind to it. So, no matter how difficult or terrible a situation may seem in the moment, I got it. Payton's internship comes to an end in August, and we wish him the best in finishing his studies at Colorado University in Boulder. #internship #iptruck #continuedlearning #commercialltrucks
