A situation shared by a colleague got me wondering: Can interns seek protection under the POSH Act? 🤔 🌱 Interns & Inclusion: As interns, it's sometimes assumed that they aren't fully part of the team due to their temporary status. But this shouldn't mean that they are left without a voice. Treating interns with respect is essential for a supportive and secure work environment, regardless of their tenure. This respect fosters dedication and skill development. 📜 POSH Act and Interns: Well, the Act does not specifically define interns. However, if we broaden the scope of the term "Employee," it encompasses individuals employed at a workplace for various work arrangements including regular, "TEMPORARY", ad hoc, or on a daily wage basis. So, YES, even as an intern, you have the absolute capacity to approach the Internal Committee (IC) of the company to file a complaint under the POSH Act. ⚖️ Challenge and Solution: The challenge arises when companies fail to establish a proper redressal approach for temporary employees, interns. In a situation I recently encountered, the company had no clear plan on how to proceed with a fair investigation, which was particularly concerning given that the intern's tenure was set to conclude in just 4 days. How could have the organisation handle this situation better? 🔒 CLEAR POLICY: Develop a policy specifically addressing how to handle harassment cases involving interns. 🕊️ INTERN REDRESSAL: Formulate Privacy Policy with a fast-tracked redressal process for intern harassment cases, considering their short duration. 📚 POSH EDUCATION: Educate interns about their rights under the POSH Act during onboarding. 👁️🗨️ VISIBLE SUPPORT: Display POSH information visibly to show commitment to intern safety and inclusion. If only the companies can create a more supportive and secure environment for interns. Not only would this build their confidence, but it would also demonstrate the company's commitment to upholding ethical standards and treating all employees, including interns, with respect and dignity. #InclusiveWorkplace #InternshipInsights #POSHProtection #EthicalEmployment #RespectEveryRole

The temporary duration of employment, lack of authority, fear of retaliation and general lack of PoSH awareness makes interns vulnerable at workplaces. A 2021 survey revealed that 47% of interns do not have a clear understanding of their rights under the PoSH Act! While 63% of them felt they were more vulnerable at workplaces, 20.7% were unsure whether their organization had an anti-sexual harassment policy and 46.5% were unsure whether their organization had an Internal Committee! Scary stats aside, internships are an exciting opportunity to gain professional experience. Though they are temporary positions, interns are entitled to the same protection as all employees. Interns have the right to speak up against any form of sexual harassment they encounter. They can report incidents to the Internal Committee (IC), and seek a fair and impartial investigation as mandated by the PoSH law. Interns at Voice of SASHA created a resource in 2021 for interns to navigate workplaces and understand how to address #sexualharassment. https://lnkd.in/gfq_Aqv4 Follow us for more! #workplacesafety #internship2024 #employeerights #poshawareness #poshact #poshcompliance #poshtraining

The last Thursday of every July is National Intern Day! Interns, students, and co-operative placements make invaluable contributions to our society and workplaces. Many of them are young or new to their sector, which means they're making these contributions while learning a new profession. Some interns don't even make a wage and are instead "paid in experience!" How is your workplace ensuring the safety of interns while they're in this vulnerable part of their careers? If your business is connected to the #RegionOfWaterloo, contact the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region's #RaiseTheBar program to see how we can support your workplace safety goals. 🌟 Calling all HR professionals: Let's make a difference for orphanage children transitioning into adulthood! 🌟 As HR professionals, we have the power to enact positive change in our communities. Today, I want to shine a light on a critical issue that often goes unnoticed: the plight of orphanage children who age out of the system without adequate support. Imagine being forced to leave the only home you've ever known at the age of 18, without a support system or the resources to build a stable future. For many orphanage children, this is their reality, and it's a nightmare scenario we cannot ignore. But here's where we can make a difference. As HR professionals, we have the expertise and resources to provide these young adults with opportunities for employment and a chance to thrive independently. I'm calling all my fellow HR professionals to join me in brainstorming solutions and taking action. Whether it's through internship programs, job placements, or mentorship initiatives, there are countless ways we can support these vulnerable individuals as they navigate the transition into adulthood. Together, let's make a commitment to create a more inclusive and supportive society for all. If you're passionate about this cause and want to collaborate on solutions, I'd love to connect and discuss further. #HRforOrphanageChildren #SupportTransition #MakeADifference
