Speed limiters on vehicles, where a lound sound is played if drivers go above the speed limit, will be introduced alongside other actions to help make driving safer for everyone. It requires you to own and drive a car. It's expensive, wasteful, unhealthy, inequitable and unsustainable. We did not choose this status quo democratically, and it did evolve as a consequence of consumer preference, free markets or technological advancement. But car dependency is usually explained in just these ways. Such misperceptions legitimize and reinforce a failed status quo. 🚗 Positive software news in road safety 🚗 According to a report from the European Road Safety Observatory in 2021, driver fatigue plays a role in 15% to 20% of overall road accidents. It's a lot. Carlo Polidori and EU researchers are pioneering tech to detect early signs of fatigue and erratic driving behavior. Thanks to an EU project, he learned that rubbing his neck while driving signals fatigue. The project, FITDRIVE, led by the ITCL Technology Center, aims to integrate tech into cars to send customised alerts to drivers, promoting safer driving habits. FITDRIVE's personalised approach sets it apart, using data from tests on volunteers to detect fatigue and prompt intervention tailored to each driver. Another project, i-DREAMS, focused on heavy-duty vehicle safety, using data analysis to coach drivers in real time and improve driving standards. 🚘 We all have seen how they tampered the cars in Fast & Furious to perform crazy drifts and win races. However, did you know that #tampering vehicles also affects their level of carbon emissions?   This is what the MODALES project is addressing!   MODALES' vision is to substantially reduce air pollution from all types of on-road vehicles by encouraging the adoption of low-emission driving behaviour and proper maintenance choices. It proposes a user-centric approach to addressing all of the challenges which enhance #lowemission practices and suppress high-emission behaviour. 🏭 It does so by researching, developing, and testing innovative and complementary solutions, with a focus on four key areas: 🚗 Driver 🚗Retrofits 🚗 EOBD 🚗Inspection   For this project, Spark looked into the legal situation on modifications in different EU Member States.
