Intriguing news from #generativeAI startup ProRata.ai, who just signed licensing collaborations with The Financial Times, Axel Springer, The Atlantic, Fortune, and Universal Music Group. The agreements are designed to create fair revenue sharing with content owners. ProRata.ai is debuting a subscription AI chatbot this fall; this tech should help evenly split revenues with content partners. Its algorithm attributes outputs to content owners, ensuring fair compensation based on the novelty and impact of their work. A pay-per-click revenue model for #ArtificialIntelligence chatbots? 👇 This Sara Fischer scoop is really interesting. I have talked to a few publishers recently who are leery of #AI deals, seeing them as one-off revenue pops that are neither recurring nor fair for what they will deliver long-term. But ProRata.ai's business model sounds different. Will "this type of attribution system can pave the way for publishers to demand fair value for their work from any generative AI company?" No startup's revenue model survives contact with the market. Everything changes and evolves. But it's crucial to experiment - both with AI content deals and building internal AI capabilities. Content providers have more value than they think. They need a hybrid of content deals with big AI companies and build products of their own.

I think this news highlights a similar question for other organizations/companies that primarily deal in information and education (like nonprofit associations). They are in the same boat as these media companies - why go to an association's website when you can go to your favorite AI chatbot and get relatively helpful answers? Distinct perspectives and original research will get you far, but as expertise becomes commoditized (like so much of reporting has), associations are going to have to think hard about when to go it alone and when it might be prudent to form relationships with AI companies that will license your content and attribute it to you. That choice - when, what, and how - will be specific to the organization. It's a strategic choice to dilute your member value proposition but potentially increase your reach.

Last night I got onto the beta test for a new app that summarises news stories from across a bunch of different sources using AI. It's so slick that I can imagine some people might be driven to use it over the sources it's based on. That's an example of just how tough a business digital publishing is today. Generative AI presents a whole load of new challenges. Particularly, how do publishers use it to keep ahead of the competition? Bridged Media offers a bunch of solutions rolled up in its AI agent platform for publishers. It allows them to take advantage of data-siloed AI tools, tailored to their needs, without having to develop their own tech. I spoke to co-founder Maanas Mediratta (pictured below with fellow co-founder Rishabh Lohia) about how this Techstars alum startup has found a niche and is pushing into sales mode to get it out to its target market.
