Startups vs Enterprises: the hidden gap at dbt Coalesce '23
Hey everyone, I hope you're having a great Saturday. I wanted to share some of my thoughts and reflections with you after taking the week to reflect.
Coalesce was an amazing event and I learned a lot about the new features and products from dbt Labs. Here are some of the highlights:
- The next generation of the dbt Semantic Layer, a new technology that enables fast and flexible querying of metrics across multiple data models. It also integrates with Tableau.
- dbt Mesh, a new paradigm that allows data teams to build and maintain their own data products using a data mesh architecture.
- Coming soon: dbt Cloud for Teams, dbt Cloud for Enterprise, dbt Cloud for Single-Tenant, dbt Cloud for Snowflake Partner Connect, and more.
These updates are impressive and exciting, but they also reveal a hidden gap. Most of the new features and products are designed for large and complex organizations that have multiple data sources, models, teams, and stakeholders.
And most of the industry talks are also from well-known and established companies that have mature and sophisticated data practices:
- dbt Labs celebrated the growth and diversity of the dbt community, which now has over 80,000 members, 25,000 companies using dbt every week, and 3,500+ companies paying for dbt Cloud.
- The conference featured sessions from industry leaders such as ClickUp, Fanduel, HubSpot, La-Z-Boy and Rivian.
What about the startups and small businesses that are also using dbt to transform their data? Do you feel that dbt Labs is becoming too enterprise-centric and losing touch with its original community?
dbt was built as an open source transformation tool for startups. The features released are all for cloud enterprise customers.
I want to hear from you. If you attended Coalesce or watched the sessions online, what did you think? What did you hope to see? Please share your thoughts in the comments below. Let's start a conversation!
