Last week, we lost an industry giant in Utah CRE, and personally, I lost one of my greatest mentors. Throughout my career, I've been lucky to have some amazing mentors, but Benjamin Brown was something else. Underneath his tough love, quirky habits, and his way of throwing around swear words and wild ideas, was one of the kindest and most generous people I've ever met. Ben was a dreamer like no other. Sure, he had a lot of out-there ideas, but when he hit on a good one, it was pure gold. His knack for thinking outside the box and finding creative solutions, even though it could be a bit much sometimes, was one of his best traits. He was a genius and easily one of the smartest people I've ever known. Ben took me under his wing back in late 2017 and showed me how to think bigger. He taught me how to creatively tackle problems in deals and not to be the problem myself. With Ben, I experienced so many firsts: my first ride in a private jet, learning swear words I never knew existed, having to buy a pair of pants at the country club because I showed up in jeans, getting my first fake Rolex, investing in my first CRE deal, driving an Audi RS7, landing the biggest shopping center listing of my career, among other things. But the most important lesson he taught me was to never let a commission stand in the way of a deal. If you focus on making your clients successful, the money will follow. Dave Ramsey is a legend. I don't think he gets enough credit for the impact he's made on millions around the world. Dave: "Play incremental long ball. Don't look for the home run. I kept waiting for somebody to call me and for this to get easy. One phone call and it's all over, and it's like "oh now I don't have to think about it anymore; someone else is gonna do it for me & it's all automatic." It's never going to be automatic. It's never going to be easy. It's a hustle and grind. You're going to make a bazillion mistakes. You put out a hypothesis you survive the experiment to live another day --> to have another experiment & put out another hypothesis --> then you have another product & idea that fails. Our failures at Ramsey are way greater than our successes, the only thing is that we survive them. A. We didn't have debt. And B. We never bet the farm on one horse. And so from a diversification standpoint, we never pushed all the chips to the middle of the table on one hand. We are not looking for the singular home run, we are looking to survive and fight another day."
