“Homelessness is not sexy”…is often the reason given for this issue not being further up the political agenda. I will tell you something else that is not very sexy…neglect and abuse of children. 80% of people affected by homelessness experienced childhood trauma including physical, sexual, emotional abuse or violence within the family. Close to 30% say that childhood trauma is the very reason they are homeless. Our homeless friends appear to be fair game for all sorts of abuse including from politicians. You often hear…”these people are on the street due to poor life choices”. If you can put 2+2 together it is crystal clear that for many the damage was done before they had any form of choice. Don’t you find it odd we have created a society that punishes children for being abused when they become adults? Are these the moral values we want to hold? At Under One Sky we collectively say “not in our name”. We are trying to bring these truths to the public consciousness while being a safe reliable and compassionate harbour for our homeless friends. The conversation surrounding domestic violence is often about the abuse itself, how to identify it, how to leave, or similar. While these topics are all extremely important, what is less known, yet reality for the many we serve is what happens after survivors escape abusive situations? Fleeing dangerous domestic violence relationships often means leaving everything behind and starting from scratch. This includes stable housing and all the things within a home that help us to live healthy lives. Through Hope Center’s housing programs, victims seeking safety from abuse work closely with our advocates to obtain what is often one of the primary goals for many after experiencing homelessness as a result of abuse: a safe, comfortable place for their families to rest their heads as they regain independence in their lives after being controlled for far too long. Nearly 50 families are CURRENTLY benefitting from one of our housing programs, with MANY more working toward gaining housing EVERYDAY. As an agency, thanks to community support like yours, we try our hardest to outfit each victim’s new living space with basic items to get them started on their journey. One need our advocates have recently identified is for small folding card tables and chairs for housing with smaller kitchens so that meals can be shared, homework can be completed, goals can be set and reached, etc. That being said, we are looking for donations of new (such as those listed on our Amazon wish list here: https://a.co/dqaRKtW) or gently used small folding card tables and chairs. It is important for us as a society to address this problem and provide support and resources for those affected. Domestic and family violence affects people from all walks of life and takes on many forms that are not always physical. 2 in 5 women (39%) have experienced violence since the age of 15*, and shockingly, 62 women were violently killed in the past five years in Victoria*. Each number represents a life unfulfilled, a family shattered, and a community in mourning. At Safe Steps, we offer support to anyone who needs to escape family and domestic violence. We conduct risk assessments and safety planning, provide pathways into emergency and supported accommodation across Victoria - including short-term pet-friendly options - collaborate with agencies to provide financial and material aid, and offer support and advice in the family courts and for people with a disability. This is a call to action for each and every Australian who hums even one line of #HowtomakeGravy this Christmas- you may not know a Joe in Prison, but you sure as hell know a Rita. This Gravy Day, we are urging all Australians to look behind the lyrics and see what we can each do to make real changes to intergenerational trauma.  This Christmas, let's give the gift of healing, evolution, and growth, enabling individuals to be the best versions of themselves for their loved ones. "You'll always get what you've always got if you always do what you've always done." This age-old saying starkly reminds us of the awful reality we face in ending violence against women. The need for change, for doing more, has never been more urgent. Our domestic violence sector is overwhelmed, struggling to keep up with the thousands of women reaching out for help, desperately needing refuge. We have to do more. We have to pull out all stops to ensure our women and children are safe in this country. Let’s start at the source. Let’s find solutions to the problem before we have to find refuge for women and children. We know this book works, we know men in prison and men who have committed domestic and family violence have been positively impacted by reading this book.
