💡 The CEMS Thought Leadership highlights #research-based content produced by the CEMS Academic Partners to fuel conversations around pressing topics in the world today! 💡 🔎 The Cornell Climate Solutions Roundtable, held on February 1, 2024, fostered interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers to address urgent climate challenges. Hosted by the Cornell Atkinson Centre for Sustainability and the 2030 Project, the event featured "lightning talks" from scholars across various fields. Topics included novel carbon capture strategies, the impact of extreme heat on human behaviour, encouraging green investments, and advancing materials for energy applications. ‘’US-based companies have seen “tangible, meaningful” gains from green relative to brown investments, but there has been no similar returns spread anywhere else in the world, including in Europe, where sustainability investing so dominates. This is a paradox we need to unravel,” says, Andrew Karolyi, the Charles Field Knight Dean of the Cornell S.C. ✍ New Publication Alert Faculty members Chris Laszlo, David Cooperrider, and Ronald Fry's new publication, titled "Business Innovation as a Force for Good: From Doing Less Harm to Positive Impact Type 1 and Type 2," aim to make a pivotal contribution to the #sustainability literature. Their work provides managers with a better #language to distinguish between different types of impact, restoring #credibility and #legitimacy to corporate sustainability goals that currently confuse doing "less harm" with "positive impact" type T1 and T2. Key Highlights: 🏹 Impact Differentiation: The research introduces distinctions between three types of innovation: doing less harm, positive impact type 1 (T1), and positive impact type 2 (T2), helping organizations move beyond reducing harm to creating positive outcomes. ☘ Value Creation: leaders are offered a framework for full-spectrum flourishing, driving sustainable value creation at all organizational levels with greater transparency and intentionality in setting innovation targets across all three types of impact. ⏱ Identifying High-Leverage Points needed to create desired change at the scale of the whole: Elevating Global Consciousness and Appreciative Inquiry Summits. This research serves as a basis for the Fowler Center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit’s 6th Global Forum for Business as an Agent of World Benefit, planned for October 2025. 🏫 Pitstop on my Journey with #Stanford on Sustainability Strategies 📚🎓 The people who know me and especially those I managed are aware that I am a big believer in life-long learning and in always challenging the status quo. Today I couldn’t be more satisfied that I pushed myself to go back to school, again. Nearing the end of Stanford's Sustainability Strategies executive program, I'm struck by how it's expanding my strategic horizons. Despite my background in #sustainability and #technology, this program has pushed me to new heights in conceptualizing sustainable business transformations. Key areas of personal growth so far: 1️⃣ #BusinessModelInnovation: Stanford's Business Model Transformation Framework has reinforced my approach to creating sustainability value propositions. It's equipping me to drive more radical innovations that align profitability with environmental impact. 2️⃣ #SystemsDynamics: Applying System Dynamics modeling to sustainability has sharpened my ability to identify leverage points for interventions with cascading positive effects across value chains. 3️⃣ #StrategicForesight: The Scenario Planning methodology has enhanced my capacity to navigate uncertainty, developing more robust, adaptable strategies for various potential futures. 4️⃣ #OrganizationalChange: The #DICE (Duration, Integrity, Commitment, Effort) framework, applied to sustainability initiatives, has refined my approach to leading transformations, providing a structured way to improve the success likelihood of ambitious projects. 5️⃣ #ValueCreation Metrics: The Sustainability Balanced Scorecard is reshaping how I measure and drive sustainable performance, ensuring alignment between initiatives and core business strategy. What's truly inspiring is how this program fosters optimism in the face of daunting environmental challenges. By equipping us with advanced frameworks, it empowers us to envision and create transformative solutions. The case studies of successful sustainability-driven innovations serve as powerful reminders that positive change is not only possible but already happening. It is invaluable for building cases for change in #ESG. I entered the program with the strong opinion that leveraging strategic frameworks is key to effectively translate challenges into opportunities for innovation and growth. This journey has reinforced my belief that sustainability, when approached strategically, is a powerful driver of innovation and value creation. Have you wondered what would happen if we all switched our ACs off at night? Even though the temperature at night is relatively lower, the need to turn on the AC is the highest A typical pitfall in life is that people operate in silos. With time they get better at identifying their comfort but fail miserably because they don't keep an eye on the actions of everyone in society as a whole. We (Mahima Prashanth, Supriya Patnaik, and myself), Candidate Impact Fellows at Global Governance Initiative are thrilled to share our interesting insights about the implications of collective action on sustainability using Game Theory. Through our work, we highlight how collaborative and simple efforts can amplify long-term positive impacts on our planet. A recent masterclass taught by Shatakshi Sharma and a real-life case-solving session had us think deeply about the small yet important arenas of existence on which Game theory can be used to arrive at the maximum possible advantage.

Only last week I successfully completed and submitted by last assignment for Sustainability Leadership in Business Course with Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) which was uplifting, demanding and truly inspiring. I am ecstatic that I have successfully completed the course with flying colours. It was an intense 8 weeks that took much hard work, commitment, studying 15-20 hours a week on top managing work, home, kids, and other commitments. It was totally worth it at the end. Thank you #Lulu Hypermarkets for supporting my ambitious Sustainability learning journey. I’ve learned so much about the critical importance of sustainability in business, how we can all contribute to a greener, more equitable future. One of the most rewarding aspects of the course was connecting with such a diverse group of professionals from all over the world, who share a passion for sustainability. The discussions, collaborations, live lectures, and shared insights have been thought provoking and truly enriching. I am thankful to have created a new network of like-minded people, change agents for a better, more equal, and thriving society. I am so grateful to the faculty and its guest speakers, who shared their wealth of knowledge and. Their guidance has been instrumental in shaping my understanding of sustainable practices and how to implement them effectively.
