One of the most interesting/exciting takeaways from today's Pivot Tech Conference in Hamilton was learning about the proposed Energy Harvesting Initiative being led by Hamilton Community Enterprises (HCE). The basic idea would be to use waste heat from industry in the Bayfront Industrial Area on Hamilton Harbour to heat buildings of all types (e.g. condos, offices, institutional buildings, etc.) in the surrounding neighbourhood (such as potentially the Pier 8 redevelopment as well as new and existing development downtown). One definite advantage that Hamilton has is that our existing industrial base (of particular note is ArcelorMittal Dofasco) produces copious amounts of waste heat, which while no longer useful to those companies, contains enough thermal energy to be very useful for applications such as space heating. An impressive team of partners/supporters have been assembled from across industry, academia, and government and an Energy Harvesting Study is currently underway, with a public Study Report expected to be released in 2024. Building Codes and Embodied Carbon: Building products generate 15% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. NBI provided crucial technical guidance and code language to the newly passed California Building Standards Code (CALGreen), which is the first state-wide code that will reduce embodied carbon. It applies to California’s new construction and major renovations over 100,000 sq ft, and provides three ways to address building reuse, building life cycle analysis (LCA), or a prescriptive option for specific products. Diversity in the Building Industry: The buildings industry needs to become more diverse and support career success for young professionals of color. To do our part, NBI created Next Gen, which provides forty college students every year with one-on-one mentorship, networking and peer support, education on decarbonization and net zero buildings, and the opportunity to attend our national Getting to Zero Forum. Energy Efficient Product Innovation: Through our Advanced Water Heating Initiative, NBI is leading a coordinated effort to accelerate growth of a new class of heat pump water heaters (HPWHs), the 120V plug-in model. NBI worked to break down barriers keeping it from the market, including leading the first field validation of 120V HPWHs. How Not to Build a Pipeline - a novella by me🖊 This month, Navigator CO2 Ventures put a pause on their #carboncapturepipeline project after local regulators struck it down, citing concerns about environmental impact and eminent domain. This was a major setback for the industry, but turns out there were some common sense lessons from pretty much any other major #infrastructure project they could have used to improve their chances of breaking ground. Said lessons below: Lesson 1: Don't ignore the community 👩👩👧👧. Local residents weren't a fan, and the company didn't appear to try very hard to get them on board. I'm also personally big on #eminentdomain (though that's a topic for another day) and - no surprises here - neither were the people who were told they'd be compensated for losing their homes. The pipeline developers failed to adequately address these concerns. Lesson 2: Be transparent 🔮. The pipeline developers were pretty secretive about the project and, as a result, they failed to provide the public with enough information about the pipeline's route and environmental impact. While these type of projects have a low probability of failure, probabilities are not necessarily going to sway people! This lack of transparency further eroded public trust and contributed to the challenge. Lesson 3: Get your permits in order📝.The pipeline developers failed to obtain all of the necessary permits before they began construction. This was a major oversight. Lesson 4: Be prepared for legal challenges ⚖️. Any major infrastructure project is likely to face legal challenges. The pipeline developers weren't prepared for this, and were ultimately unsuccessful in defending their project in court. Ideally, create a story and plan for community benefit so that people don't want to take you to court in the first place. Lesson 5: Don't underestimate the power of public opinion ⁉️. Public opinion can play a major role in the success or failure of any major infrastructure project. Make sure to gauge public opinion and address concerns transparently. This situation doesn't bode well for ethanol producers, who were going to use the carbon capture pipeline to create low-carbon fuel at tailpipe. As with many things in this world, carbon capture is a tricky subject. I mean, even Al Gore has flip-flopped on it, if that tells you anything. There's a lot of other places we could be investing (e.g., renewables, direct air capture, tech to improve energy efficiency), but that doesn't mean we won't need some form of carbon capture eventually. How can we take forward projects like this equitably, learning from other infrastructure projects?

But methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas in the short term, compared with carbon dioxide, and it can leak anywhere along the supply chain, from the production wellhead to processing plants to the stovetop. The process of liquefying gas to make it suitable for transport is incredibly energy intensive as well, creating yet more emissions.” Asking, as Biden did, for an analysis of the environmental impacts of going ahead with this project — to determine if proceeding is in “the public interest” — is expected to generate criteria that will also be used to evaluate another sixteen natural gas terminals that are awaiting approval. Natural gas is often touted as a good transitional fuel as we move toward renewable energy. But leaks along the supply chain mean that it’s typically no better than coal. "...
