Hi everyone! Mark Maxfield here, CEO of The Cottages Assisted Living & Memory Care. On this platform I don’t usually talk about my personal life a lot, but recently I had an opportunity to go on an ocean cruise to Mexico. It’s the first time in my life I’ve been able to go on a cruise and do something like that. I spent some great time with my wife, my adult children, and some of my grandchildren, and it was a lot of fun. I’m not a drinker or a gambler so I spent all of my time at the buffet, the gym, and outside on the deck. And there’s two places that are outside on the deck. One is on the back of the ship. You can see the wake of this large ocean liner ship going, and you can see where you’ve been, and the birds that follow. My favorite view was from the very front of the ship. On the front there’s a place you can stand, and I felt a little like Leonardo DeCaprio with the wind blowing in my hair, and it was a lot of fun. But you can see where you’re going. And I started thinking, that’s kind of like leadership. It’s kind of like business and life. There are two views in life. Where you’ve been, and where you’re going. I think my favorite view was in the front because that’s kind of like what I am as a leader. I help gauge where we are going and what we are going to do. I have people on my team who have great memories and great recollection of where we’ve been. And you need both on your team. The things you learn in the past versus the things that you’re doing in the future. So, whatever view you have is fine, and hopefully you surround yourself with good smart people like I have, who are able to have different views from you. Where you’ve been. Where you’re going. Put them together and that’s leadership, that’s business, and that’s life.
