What is the difference between thinking tactically and thinking strategically? Everett Dolman defines thinking tactically as seeking culmination while thinking strategically seeks continuation. Thinking tactically seeks a conclusion and forces an adversary into limited options. It could also be organizing your group's means only towards a given "end." Thinking strategically seeks continuation. It seeks a position that provides a continuing advantage and keeping multiple options available. For me, the visualization of a tournament bracket to demonstrate tactical thinking and its reversal to understand strategic thinking was helpful. Business Strategy

A really good long form article (with data) illustrating the tension at Service academies between the need for diverse perspectives in their officer corps and systems that often disadvantage the diverse individuals. While this tension is seen in the experiences of the socio-economically diverse and prior enlisted (both apply to me), it is most acute for racial diversity because it is an ever-visible part of a students identity. The academy prep schools like the United States Military Academy Preparatory School provide immense value by improving the access to and success of these more of these diverse populations. However, the core quantitative “meritocracy” of the academies present inherent challenges evidenced by the data in this article. The article sums up the challenges of quantifying every aspect of “merit” for officer candidates: “Owens has expressed concern that cadets are too often treated as numbers: their GPA or class rankings that determine who gets coveted assignments such as a place in flight school…But I've been talked down to more because of my class rank than because I'm a Black man." I cannot recommend enough this article on mapping (and re-mapping) the Gettysburg campaign in support of the operational art: "the arrangement of tactical actions in time, space and purpose in the pursuit of strategic objectives". Page 36. It is a stark reminder of the primacy of cartography as a communicative art. To me it highlights the risks of a technology focus in mapping / GEOINT. Are we in the right mindset, at least in Canada, to support Generals at war? Or is our military mapping focused on supporting a department surviving a government? It’s here — “Making War Upon the Map.” For years, the US Army and military historians have struggled to depict #operationalart on paper. This has resulted in an imperfect grasp of operational art, and has had adverse effects on how future commanders have studied and visualized the arrangement of tactical actions in time, space, and purpose. Most existing maps do not put future officers into the headspace of commanders of large formations in war. My The United States Army War College colleague and friend Thomas Bruscino, Jr. and I have written an article for Army History: The Professional Bulletin of Army History (published by the US Army Center of Military History) that tells this story. Additionally, we’ve worked hard to produce maps of our own for a familiar campaign that shed new light on Gettysburg and why US Army of the Potomac commander George Meade made the decisions he made on campaign. This article has been in the works for years and we’re excited to have it out in the world. We hope it will be useful for students of military history and for officers at #PME schoolhouses preparing for future commands and assignments at various staffs. Today's Friday College Feature is on 2 military schools. The expert on this specific niche is really Lisa (Bachman) Rielage, but I will attempt to do my best. When we think of a military school, we usually think of the United States Military Academy at West Point and rightly so. ➡️ The post itself is the oldest continuously occupied regular army post in the United States. ➡️ Thomas Jefferson created the academy. ➡️ The first West Point superintendent actually had no military experience. ➡️ Now, about 10,000 apply to West Point, but only 1,000 are admitted. Another military school is the United States Merchant Marine Academy. ➡️ It began in 1943. ➡️ It now serves as a training center for midshipmen to serve as officers in the United States Merchant Marine, branches of the United States Armed Forces and in the transportation industry. ➡️ It also enrolls about 1,000 undergrads and has a graduation rate of 81%.
