As time flies by, I'm approaching the two-month mark of my tenure at RBC, which seems like an appropriate time to share my observations so far: A common myth is that a teller's job is dated and set to become obsolete. I assure you - not in the near future. Just like the industry itself, it is mediated by far more complex technological resources, enabling a far more advanced range of problem-solving capabilities. Ironically, as technology advances, the need for higher expertise in problem-solving also increases. Client/banking advisors are some of the most versatile workers I've known. Strategic relationship building is another aspect of this role that's become far more nuanced. Giving advice is foremost about proactively spotting beneficial opportunities and being genuine in your interactions. Why would clients trust me with their financial matters when numerous alternatives are available? The answer is quite simple - because I care (or at least should strive to 😄). And honestly, I do naturally care when I bear responsibility for a transaction, become invested in my client's unique story, and build new connections. I'm a storyteller. I usually don't plan to tell stories but I have come to realize that who I am today can not be understood without going back to who I was before I had a 360-degree transformation. My younger self passed through so many hurdles, I can recall one night when I wondered why it seemed so many people disliked me in my office at that time. There was no single day I didn't have a reason to quit, I didn't know what kept me so long in that organization(8years). It seemed like the more I tried to stick to the rule book 📚, the more people wanted me to look away from what was written to what they wanted. They wanted me to follow their style of bullying younger staff, feeling superior, and taking time off work to gossip and I didn't want any of those. I just wanted to get the job done. I was also a middle-level staff member and they didn't understand why I was not joining them to bully younger staff. I felt alone in my struggle to do the right thing and what the job demanded, they made me feel that to succeed in that organization, I wasn't meant to just meet targets, but I must belong to a clique of people who moved together, gossiped about other staff and licked the boots of those who were to determine who got promoted or not. That was strange to me because in my previous place of work, let's call it Bank A, I was loved by my managers. I always met my targets and even won a trip to South Africa for achieving my target within the set time (500 funded Diamond Express account) My Manager pleaded with me not to leave, I explained to her that I needed a more challenging environment and I felt the new organization I was going to would bring the needed growth I was seeking in my banking career. That was why I was very disappointed to find out what success meant to the new organization (Bank B) was not about meeting targets, it was more about belonging to cliques of those who could determine whether you got promoted or not. Well, I stayed there and went through all the lessons that life brought my way. I realized they all had a set mindset quite different from what I knew and as such it was difficult to fit in but I didn't quit, I found a way to still meet my targets despite the unfriendly attitude of my colleagues. I remained who I was, then moved on when I had a better offer. Shortly after I quit banking and went to build my own business. Surprisingly, after some years, a different lady who I didn't know when I was in that organization, heard about me and my work. Then invited me to train my former colleagues. I noticed how shocked many of them were seeing how transformed I had become. As I spoke with so much passion and confidence. I couldn't believe it was a place I once dreaded that I was being celebrated as a consultant. The lesson I took away is that being in the right environment brings out the best in you. Get away from where you are not celebrated. Sometimes you need to leave to be missed. ☺️
