Chief Digital Content Officer at Council on Foreign Relations

It was my first time at Investigative Reporters and Editors's annual conference and I’m in awe of the focus on the craft, *process* and all the stuff we don’t see. Ken Armstrong and Raquel Rutledge talked through their 14,000 word, nut graf-free 36 chapter story, The Landlord & the Tenant: https://lnkd.in/eaKxy-vb Ron Nixon, Mark Katches and dean baquet gave us a peek into how they vet investigative story ideas. Here's an incomplete list: Is it a new problem? Is there a reveal? Can you humanize/quantify it? Is there a clear victim? Can you hold someone accountable? What’s the minimum story? Is the scope big enough, the stakes high enough? It's not a science, but you must be rigorous and relentless. Finally, I was so happy that the Council on Foreign Relations’ Local Journalists Initiative sponsored this panel on local investigations. Our initiative helps local and regional journalists cover how international and foreign policy issues affect local communities. If you're interested and want to talk further, please reach out!
