It was my first time at Investigative Reporters and Editors's annual conference and I’m in awe of the focus on the craft, *process* and all the stuff we don’t see. Ken Armstrong and Raquel Rutledge talked through their 14,000 word, nut graf-free 36 chapter story, The Landlord & the Tenant: https://lnkd.in/eaKxy-vb Ron Nixon, Mark Katches and dean baquet gave us a peek into how they vet investigative story ideas. Here's an incomplete list: Is it a new problem? Is there a reveal? Can you humanize/quantify it? Is there a clear victim? Can you hold someone accountable? What’s the minimum story? Is the scope big enough, the stakes high enough? It's not a science, but you must be rigorous and relentless. Finally, I was so happy that the Council on Foreign Relations’ Local Journalists Initiative sponsored this panel on local investigations. Our initiative helps local and regional journalists cover how international and foreign policy issues affect local communities. If you're interested and want to talk further, please reach out! ✍🏼 🆘💪 We always look for more ways to support journalists — not only financially. While the advantages of cross-border collaboration are clear, potential issues are also to be considered. If you have experience carrying out cross-border investigations, please fill in a really short form to let us understand more about the obstacles that you had faced in this process. 🫱🏻🫲🏽👍🏼👎🏼 https://lnkd.in/ey9dFd_u

This will be my 17th year responding on behalf of businesses to the Spring Budget - getting all of the comments and analysis together gives me as much of a buzz now as it did back then. The need for speed and providing a different stance is always the most helpful for journalists - that will never change. #springbudget #needforspeed #budget2024
Budget days are chaotic. Journalists work incredibly long hours and are under massive pressure to quickly deliver some of the year's most important and complex news to a very hungry audience. Getting your voice heard amongst the din is hard, but absolutely worth it, as there is no other day where the public are more engaged with reporting on big policy issues. We're very pleased with the coverage secured for many of our clients yesterday.

Ever imagine a world where rumors rule the roost and truth flickers like a candle in a hurricane? That was life for most of history, with information traveling slower than a horse and powerful folks spinning stories with no one to fact-check them. Then, in 1908, a revolution sparked on the banks of the Missouri River. The University of Missouri, with Wild West-worthy guts, launched the world's first journalism school. This wasn't just some new class; it was a statement. It recognized that informed citizens are the backbone of a healthy democracy, and journalists, armed with honesty and a truth obsession, are the watchdogs guarding it all. Sure, journalism as a formal thing might be just over 100 years old, but its roots dig deep into history. From town criers in ancient Greece to Enlightenment-era pamphleteers, there's always been a need for people to record events, hold power accountable, and give a voice to the voiceless. Think of good journalists as the antibodies of a nation's immune system. They expose corruption, dig into injustices, and shine a light on the stuff that matters most. They're the bridge between fancy government buildings and your kitchen table, making sure you have the info you need to make informed choices and hold those in power responsible. In our world overflowing with fake news and echo chambers, good journalism is a beacon of truth. It encourages critical thinking, gets people involved in their communities, and empowers you to be an active part of your democracy. Without a strong, independent press, the whispers and rumors return, and the powerful become even more powerful, hidden behind a curtain of secrecy. So, the next time you see a well-researched article or an investigative report, remember the legacy of Mizzou and the critical role journalists play. They might not wear capes, but their relentless pursuit of truth is the shield that protects the very foundations of a free and just society. We at the School of Liberal Studies, trying our best to train students in legacy journalism so that a new generation of democracy's bodyguard is in place. #UPES #Journalism #MassMedia #BJMC #MJMC #missouri #usa #america
