March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. Why do brain injuries get a whole month of recognition? Because traumatic brain injury contributes to more death and disability than other traumatic injuries (globally) & is viewed as a preventable injury. One such indication that prevention is possible is the decrease in emergency department visits for children with bicycle injuries between 2009-2018 (in the US). How companies win hearts and minds…

We all know it’s been a rough year, with the cost-of-living crisis leaving many kiwis with little money or access to much of the kai available. It’s time we all band together to pitch in for those in our communities who need some support. Earlier this week, one of our incredible collaborators the New Zealand Food Network, launched a 12 month fundraising campaign - Pitch In! If you’ve yet to hear about their mahi, NZFN is dedicated towards creating food access and redistributing kai around Aotearoa. Their passion is evident, as shown in their mahi within XLabs NZ and New Zealand Food Waste Champions 12.3 Charitable Trust (NZFWC 12.3 Trust). CEO Gavin Findlay recently joined us at XLabs earlier this year to redesign a new food system along other leading food organisations, whilst Deborah Manning (Founder & Strategic Engagement Advisor) is an active Trustee and Food Waste Champion alongside our Founder & CEO Louise Nash. Pitch In is an exciting campaign providing a helping hand to those in our community in need. By pitching in to fill up Eden Park in Tāmaki Makaurau with kai as many times as possible, we can provide “100,000 meals for hungry Kiwis each time around”. I did a thing. At Paddy & Scott's, we are constantly pushed to take risks at our leadership team meetings to step out of our comfort zones. So when the incredible Little Lifts team asked me to join their sponsored skydive for charity, despite my extreme fear of heights, I couldn’t say no. For months, I agonized over everything that could go wrong and questioned my decision. But yesterday, it all came together. I jumped out of a plane at 13,000 feet for a fantastic cause. I wasn’t alone—six fellow Little Lifts jumpers joined, and everyone nailed it. This experience taught me a lot. First, taking risks is crucial. Without risks, there’s no opportunity to overcome challenges. The biggest lesson? The power of SUPPORT and TEAMWORK. I arrived at the airfield, nerves in full swing, with my amazing family supporting me. To my surprise, Jonathan Reed and Zoe Hill, our company owners, were there too, cheering me on. Would I have signed up if it wasn’t for Little Lifts? NO. Would I have gone through with it without the amazing support from my family, friends, and colleagues? Maybe not, but their support made all the difference. One of the best experiences of my life. I encourage everyone to take a risk. Giving Tuesday We have had Black Friday, which seemed to last a whole month, everywhere you looked there were messages telling you how much you could save. And still they go on. It’s Time to flip that on its head. Life is enriched not by having but giving. For me, Happiness and a meaning to life comes from giving to others, especially those less fortunate than oneself. This is the point of Giving Tuesday. Many charities need you. You can always find one that sparks a real meaning for you. They come in all shapes and sizes, for a huge range of causes. Giving doesn’t just mean money. You can give your time, your energy, or simply your voice to spread awareness. Your support is what they need. Lots of people around the country are doing various events to raise funds for their Freewheel programme. The programme supplies cycles to survivors of human trafficking and modern slavery. The aim for the weekend is to supply 200 bikes for the programme. On Saturday 2nd December I will be attempting to complete the vEveresting challenge. Riding on Zwift for repeats of the virtual Alpe D’Zwift climb until I reach the equivalent of the height of Mount Everest, 8848 metres of climbing, approximately 9 ascents of the Alpe. On Sunday morning 9am, I will be leading a one hour social ride around a flat course in virtual London on Zwift with Gordon Miller, CEO of Ride For Freedom. This ride is a great opportunity to ride at a social pace and chat on Discord with fellow Zwifters. With Zwift’s magic band function keeping everyone together regardless of power, its the perfect club ride. Opportunities to join me on Saturday exist throughout the day. If you use Zwift and want to ride even a small section of the Alp with me, I would be very grateful of the company. To join, first make sure you are following me on Zwift. My Zwift name is F rosty the snowbear (just search for Snowbear and you should find me). Then use the Ride with a Zwifter option on your home screen and select my name. It will take me at least 12 hours to do this so plenty of opportunity to find me whatever time you are free, your support on the day will be very welcome.
