As we're closing the door on the last day of #FallMRS, I’m also opening the first door of the 2023 #AFMprobeadventcalendar. Today I got an Adama 2.8, so I’m doing piezo force microscopy on periodically poled lithium niobate as I install the first #Vero in the wild at our Concord, MA office.
With Vero’s interferometric detection, the sensitivity is automatically calibrated when you put the detection spot over the tip. And, since displacement is measured directly, artifacts due to beam bending are avoided, meaning your d_eff value is accurate-no luck or special skills required.
Here, I start with zero drive amplitude and increment by a mere 0.05 V every 16 lines. Phase contrast and an accurate d_eff are observed after the first increment, and the image only becomes clearer as the amplitude increases to 0.75 V. Trace and retrace overlap and the domains are equal: no friction, crosstalk, or bending artifacts here.
If you missed us at MRS, join us for one of our webinars (https://okt.to/igLBZ9 or https://okt.to/M8FU09). And Ted is bouncing up and down with excitement to introduce you to Vero in Concord!

Arm Therapy Combinations
I'm working on extension, strength and control of my left arm, using a weighted hammer. Why a hammer? When resistance is used during a stroke exercise, it forces the non-functioning muscle to contract, thus "reminding" the muscle how to function again, and creating new neural pathways in the brain. I am with Kali Nordin at NAU participating in their bootcamp for Stroke Survivors.

It is my blushing pleasure to share with you that our manuscript, titled '𝐀𝐛𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧/𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐇𝐢𝐩 𝐄𝐱𝐨𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐔𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐖𝐢𝐝𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠,' has been selected as a 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 for the 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐄𝐄𝐄 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠. 😊 I would like to express my gratitude to all my co-authors, with special thanks to Aaron Fleming, Varun Nalam, and He (Helen) Huang for the vigorous support they provided.
The main points of our study are as follows:
1) Yes, the step width can be increased or decreased with the help of a mediolaterally (ML) active hip exoskeleton. The admittance control architecture for this is provided in the paper.
2) On average, four consecutive heel strikes were enough to reach the new step width state.
3) No, bilateral gluteus medius activity, which plays an important role in frontal stability in gait, did not change across trials in comparison to volitional step width changes reported in the literature.
The main question is why these findings are promising. Step width control is crucial for mediolateral balance during gait. We believe that the findings from this study, along with other pilot tests, will lead to enhanced mediolateral gait balance for populations with compromised gait balance. Stay tuned. 🚀

Does Chin Up Help with the Production of Belt Quality?
Written by VSC Senior Lecturer Kerrie Obert
"The process of working through the benefits or limitations of a particular chin position requires drawing from knowledge of anatomy, physiology, acoustics, and even the field of swallowing.
It’s a long process to think through all the possibilities and ramifications..."
