They appeared around half a billion years ago and died out just before dinosaurs appeared around 250 million years ago. Today we can only find fossilised remains of these creatures. Marine Iguanas are a true example of how nature evolves to its environment. These iguanas are the only iguanas that can swim and eats marine plants and algae. The biggest issue however is that the oceans water chemistry is changing at a rapid rate due to climate change and the life under the water cannot adapt quick enough to survive these changes. World Snake Day 🐍 World Snake Day is celebrated on July 16 every year to highlight the important role these reptiles play in maintaining the ecological balance. The snake is one of the oldest mythological characters and has been revered by civilizations the world over. There are about 3,458 species of snakes known so far, ranging from the semi-frozen tundra of northern Canada to the steamy jungles of the equator and most of the world’s oceans. Snakes are highly effective predators and play a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature in each of these realms. Snakes are also fascinating in that they have a prehistoric lineage, thus giving us a glimpse back to a prehistoric time when the earth was ruled by reptiles—many people have no idea that modern reptiles are literally the living, breathing cousins of dinosaurs.

#CritterCorner: Did you know... Southern Cassowaries belong to the taxonomic order Struthioniformes, commonly known as ‘ratites’? Ratites are morphologically different to other birds - they lack a keel bone, to which flight muscles attach, and they only have small vestigial wings. Other ratites include the ostrich species, emu, New Zealand’s five kiwi species and the two rhea species of South America. Ratites occur on all Southern continents except Antarctica, reflecting their Gondwanan heritage. They are ancient birds that began to evolve around 60 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period, when non-avian dinosaurs were the dominant animal life on Earth.
