Today is National Pets for Veterans Day! The companionship of a pet can offer emotional support, reduce stress, and even help to manage symptoms of PTSD and depression. If you are a veteran looking to adopt a pet, reach out to your local animal shelter or take a look at one of these organizations: Pets for Patriots: a nonprofit organization that connects veterans with shelter animals. They offer reduced adoption fees and provide ongoing support for the veterans and their adopted pets, including access to veterinary care. Operation Delta Dog: This organization focuses on rescuing shelter dogs and training them to become service dogs for veterans with PTSD and other psychiatric conditions. Patriot Paws Service Dogs: Patriot Paws provides service dogs to disabled veterans at no cost. Today, we’re launching a project that is very close to my heart. As you can probably tell from the things I post, dogs play a huge role in my life. They bring love, joy, companionship – not to mention the proven physical and mental health benefits. Pets in happy homes is a win-win for the pet and the owner. But not all pets have the care they need, with millions of dogs and cats living on the streets or in shelters. In fact, 1 in 3 pets are homeless.   That’s why Mars set out, alongside leading animal welfare experts, to understand how so many pets end up homeless. And today, we’re releasing open-source data to not only be smarter with the actions we take, but to help others take action too. Moving from treating the symptoms to really solving the root causes.   It's a complex challenge, but understanding the contributing factors is a crucial step so that targeted action can follow. "Most emergency shelters are not pet-friendly… But the Providing for Unhoused People with Pets (PUPP) Act wants to fix that. Natural disasters… House fires… Financial hardship… No matter the circumstances, access to emergency housing is a lifeline. But if shelters don’t allow pets, unhoused people must make the impossible decision between having a roof over their heads or staying with their beloved companion animal. The PUPP Act is a bipartisan Congressional bill that would create a grant program to provide emergency shelters with funds to support clients with pets. Funds can be used to retrofit facilities to better accommodate pets, provide basic veterinary services and more – all with the aim of removing unnecessary barriers to emergency housing. Today is International Homeless Animal Day 🐶 If you or someone you know is facing housing challenges, talk to them about Pets of the Homeless. Pets of the Homeless is an incredible organization devoted to “keeping pets and humans together.” They provide a variety of resources to the unhoused community including pet food, emergency veterinary care, wellness clinics, and help locating pet-friendly shelters. You can also take action to advocate for more resources for unhoused people and their pets. The Providing for Unhoused People with Pets (PUPP) Act would establish a grant program for homeless shelters, so they can access the funds they need to support clients with pets. A newsletter from Morning Brew hit my inbox with the following statistics: The number of stray dogs in US shelters has increased by 22% since 2021, per data from the Shelter Animals Count database. Canine deaths in shelters are up 27% from last year and 78% from 2021. The Bloomberg article is linked below. Those who work in rescue, unfortunately, knew this could happen. Most folks who adopt dogs are first time dog owners. They finally had the time to stay home, acclimate a dog and have a companion during difficult times. But then, they were called back to the office… and things got tricky. I’ve met a good number of pandemic dogs and the most common issues I see are: - Social awkwardness to full on reactivity towards dogs, humans and/or both - Separation anxiety Both difficult to handle during swift RTO mandates. We ask folks who adopt dogs to stand by them, but how can they when their livelihoods are at risk? These policies not only cause harm to humans. These policies are killing dogs. I repeat: Canine deaths in shelters are up 27% from last year and 78% from 2021.
